Kilimall partners with Aramex to enhance its delivery network

Kilimall, one of the largest e-commerce website in Kenya, has entered into a partnership with Aramex, the global logistics, and transport provider, to strengthen its delivery network.

This partnership will see Kilimall fulfill more orders to different parts of the country.

Under this partnership, Aramex will provide delivery solutions to Kilimall’s e-shoppers in various parts of the country.

This partnership is part of Kilimall’s strategy to enhance its delivery solutions.

Kilimall already brags an extensive delivery network but the partnership is timely since it comes at a time when the e-commerce website has experienced significant growth since its establishment.

According to Kilimall, the partnership is important since it will help to improve overall customer experience.

This is definitely good since e-commerce websites in Kenya still have a lot to do in order to earn the complete trust of Kenyans.

Locally, many people are skeptical when it comes to e-commerce transactions; hence, improving their experience should be a priority.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Kilimall’s MD Robin Xie expressed Aramex’s commitment to deliver all orders in a timely manner.

He also stated that the number of online shoppers has increased over time and that this justified the need for comprehensive delivery solutions.

Aramex is a leading brand with operations in various parts of the country.

With its countrywide presence, Aramex promises to enhance delivery services as Kilimall continues to experience exponential growth in terms of orders.

Xie added that Aramex is happy to partner with Kilimall owing to its strong networks.

At present, Kilimall delivers products within one day in Nairobi and two days for shoppers in other parts of the country.

This means that having more delivery companies on board could significantly reduce the delivery time.

Kilimall is one of Kenya’s largest online shopping malls.

It was launched in July 2014 and it offers products in various categories such as electronics, apparel, home appliances, smartphones, baby products, personal care, and much more.

At the moment, its’ biggest competitor has to be Jumia since the two offer products of similar categories.

The e-commerce site has, however, managed to create a niche for itself in a market that has several alternatives.

Other partnerships

At the moment, Kilimall has three other delivery partners namely Fargo Courier, Posta Kenya, and G4S.

The partnership with Aramex, therefore, brings the total number of delivery partners to four.

The online shopping mall appears to be big on partnerships since it recently partnered with Safaricom to allow customers to pay for products and services using Bonga points, Safaricom’s loyalty program.

The redemption value is Ksh. 2 shillings per 10 points. This made Kilimall the first online local store to accept Bonga points as a payment option. Kilimall also accepts payments via mobile money services.

The Kilimall-Aramex partnership is a step towards ensuring overall customer satisfaction.

The e-commerce site has a robust and easily navigable website through which orders can be made easily; hence, it strategic to also ensure that deliveries are made in a timely manner.

Perhaps reduce the delivery time within Nairobi to two or three hours? That would be nice.

Naivas Supermarket Unveils Naivas Pay

Naivas has on the 3rd of October launched Naivas Pay, a digital payment system set to be used in all Naivas retail stores.

Currently, there is increased demand for safer, convenient, and faster payment method in Kenya. This has been, in part, encouraged by the notable growth of the retail market. Naivas Pay is, therefore, an apt response to the growing demand for a better payment solution.

Naivas Pay is supported by a PDQ point of sale machine and the Naivas internal retail software. The new payment system will accept cash, debit and credit cards.  Mobile money, including M-Pesa and Equity’s Eazzypay, will also be accepted.

The launch may spell doom for other payment solutions such as Lipa na M-Pesa, the recently launched M-Pesa 1Tap, and MasterCard.

Advantages of Naivas Pay

Technology has changed how we make and receive payments. One of the advantages of this is the emergence of a cashless economy which translates to convenience and ease in tracking spends. On the other hand, digital money platforms have given rise to fraud. This has forced key players to come up with ways to combat fraud and Safaricom is leading the pack with the photo identification strategy dubbed ‘Know Your Customer.

The Naivas Pay payment method benefits both the customer and the supermarket chain. One of the advantages of the Naivas Pay payment system is that the supermarket chain will reduce the cost of processing payments with Interswitch as the system’s integrator.

Secondly, Naivas Pay will allow customers to make direct payments from their bank accounts using their devices, cards, and tags thus eliminating processing costs. In addition, Naivas Pay gives the merchant more control over how payments are made and processed.

The next advantage is that with a single payment processing system, it will be easy to reconcile data unlike when they worked with several processors.

Finally, Naivas will be able to collect customer data which will help the supermarket chain understand customer behavior. This data may include shopping frequency, locations, and payment methods. The data collected can be used to make adjustments in order to offer better services.

Entry into e-commerce space

Naivas has expressed interest in the e-commerce space and is set to launch operations by the end of the year.

Over the past few years, supermarket chains have been feeling the heat from growing e-commerce sector and this may have pushed Naivas to consider entry into this space.

The supermarket chain says that their e-commerce store will come with a full product range as their physical stores. Over 10kproducts will be available for home delivery.

One of the challenges facing the e-commerce sector in Kenya is timely delivery. Most e-commerce companies in Kenya are yet to ensure that customers receive their orders in the nearest time possible. However, there seems to be some progress in this area since Kilimall’s partnership with Aramex suggests that these companies are putting in place measures to solve this problem. Naivas is alleged to be in talks with a delivery partner that will do all customer deliveries.

Safaricom’s Latest Investment is Masoko, An e-commerce Platform

In Kenya, Safaricom dominates the communication and mobile money industries. The company has, however, continued to diversify its business with Masoko being the latest addition to its portfolio.

The company has been doing quite well and its 2016/2017 financial report paints a picture of a company that is making gobs of money. That also explains why the new venture will be financed by the company.

Masoko is one of the business ventures that the local tech giant is using to build on the success of M-Pesa, the mobile money transfer service that dominates the local scene.

The goal is to make Masoko better than leading e-commerce companies in the region.

Safaricom will be the first telco in Kenya to diversify its trade with eCommerce and hopefully among the few key players who have managed to successfully establish such platforms.

Masoko is set to go live on March 2018 and word is that it will borrow from largely from Alibaba’s operational principle. Specifically, the platform will integrate mobile payments and e-retail as opposed to having inventory systems as is the case with Jumia and Kilimall.

About Masoko

The eCommerce platform will offer products ranging from electronics to cosmetics. It will also provide a platform for customers and traders on various social media platforms.

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore was quoted saying that in two to three years’ time, the platform will have expanded beyond Kenya but there was no mention of markets under consideration.

He added that they do not plan to establish operations outside Africa because there are a lot of considerations and challenges.

Collymore was also quoted saying that the platform will not hold any inventory or allow anyone to sell. He said that the company will screen all merchants before giving them access to the platform.

The company will work with manufacturers and farmers seeking direct market access and at the same time reduce supply-chain inefficiencies such as transportation costs.

M-Pesa will be the main payment method but other online payment services and cards by Visa and MasterCard will apply.

To make deliveries within the shortest time possible, Safaricom is establishing partnerships with leading logistics companies. This will ensure that the delivery time is reduced considerably.  This was also the basis of Kilimall’s partnership with Aramex; hence, Masoko has to do better if it hopes to meet this goal.

One of the advantages that Masoko has is that Safaricom has a significant consumer base and trust. Also, ownership and vast experience in mobile payments give the company a competitive edge.

At the moment, Masoko is undergoing in-house testing before it can be released to the market in 2018.

E-Commerce Growth

The e-commerce industry has gradually gained ground in Kenya thanks to increasing number of mobile and internet users. This has, in turn, been driven by the availability of affordable smartphones in the market.

Kenyans are gradually warming up to the idea of online shopping and this means that new comers like Masoko have to work towards earning people’s trust.

This Week in Tech: M-PESA’s Third Major Upgrade and More Weekly Tech Trends

It has been an eventful week. Politicians continue to dine and wine at your local Kibandaski. They almost look desperate as they make almost believable promises. The thirst is real.

It gets better:

Thanks to Wavinya Ndeti, we have a new hit titled “Yaliyo ndwele Sipite”.

Politics aside, the tech world spun in all the right angles. As usual, we have picked the top ten.

1. Yet another Outage from Safaricom

The good news is that this was announced.

The planned M-PESA upgrade was set for 30th June between 1 am and 3 am making M-PESA services unavailable.

The upgraded platform comes with new feature and other enhancements for a better user experience.

While at it, you should brace for a 12-hour outage in coming days.

2. Kilimall Eyeing Africa’s ‘Alibaba’ Status

The thirst to control the Kenyan e-commerce space gets real each day. We have seen several companies launch since Kenyans started to buy the idea of online shopping.

Those who have earned a place like Kilimall keep reinventing themselves in a bid to stay afloat and remain competitive. One of the strategies was to create partnerships such as the one with Aramex whose objective is to enhance its delivery network.

Kilimall has launched a Business-to-Business (B2B) model that will lay a strong foundation even as it endeavors to become Africa’s Alibaba.

This model will allow merchants in Africa to conduct business with merchants from China on its platform. This means that merchants in Kenya will act as intermediaries that will be in contact with the final customer.

3. Communications Authority Seizes 5000 Fake Phones

We all have that one friend who bought a fake phone on the streets: either from some random guy or those pilfers who pretend to be Safaricom staff, Tom Mboya Avenue anyone?

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) has nabbed over 5,000 fake phones in Mombasa County.

The phones were seized from retailers who sell counterfeit phones to unsuspecting customers. To be fair, it is possible that some of those retailers have been doing so unknowingly.

The CA is on a mission to wipe out counterfeit phones in the market as well as their distribution. This operation began in 2012 and is expected to continue.

Good news for us, bad news for the black market operators.

4. A .KE Domain Coming Soon

The Kenya Network Information Center (KeNIC) has announced that they will introduce .ke domain soon.

In a tweet, KeNIC said that the second level .ke domain will be rolled out on 23rd July. The tweet also advised those interested to secure their’s early enough.

5. Warren Foundation Launches Outdoor Safety Initiative

The Warren Foundation has today officially launched an outdoor safety initiative set to sensitize the public on safety when undertaking outdoor activities.

The Foundation was formed following the tragic death of 14-year-old Warren Asiyo during a climbing expedition at Mt. Kenya.

6. Jack Ma Expected in Kenya

Alibaba founder and CEO is coming to Kenya.

The Chinese business magnate is expected in Kenya from the 19th July 2017. He expected to meet up with young entrepreneurs and shed some insight on how the youth and small businesses can become part of the global trade.

7. OLX Soma Award Winners

This year’s OLX Soma Awards were held at a gala event at the Radisson Blu, Nairobi.

Some of the big winners are Betty Kyallo, Victor Wanyama, Joy Kendi, and Michelle Ntalami.

8. Google “Meanness” Lands it in Trouble

Google has been slapped with a $2.7bn fine by the EU for violating Antitrust Laws.

The search giant is accused of abusing its power by promoting its shopping comparison service at the top of search results. This way, the company has been denying other companies from competing fairly.

Google has refuted such claims.

9. Chapa Dimba na Safaricom Launched

Chapa Dimba na Safaricom is a football competition that will identify football talent in Kenya.

It is the baby of Safaricom and Football Federation of Kenya.

10. Uber Selfies for Safety

Uber Kenya will now require its drivers to take selfies as a security measure.

The news security feature is called Real-Time ID Check will require drivers to periodically take selfies before accepting a ride. This will, in turn, help ensure that the driver‘s current photos and those sent to the company match.

If the photos do not match, the account is blocked temporarily.

Uber terms this as a strategy that will protect its drivers from fraud, theft, and other risks. The feature will also ensure that you are driven by the right driver.

So, do not be caught staring at that Uber driver hard, the selfies are all for the common good.

That’s it for this week. Have a good weekend.

This is after the telecom giant launched FLEX, a product that allows customers to manage their airtime for data, SMS, and calls.

This product will allow Safaricom customers to convert their airtime into FLEX units that can then be allocated to data, SMS, and calls.

The minimum plan costs Ksh. 99 and with this, you get 115 FLEX units valid for 24 hours.

The Kshs. 75 base fare and Kshs. 2.3 per minute prices have been maintained. The new fare structure is expected to change beginning April.

This did not receive a lot of focus but it’s not shocking since we cannot expect Taxify to make explicit public statements on the price hike.
