Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history with a total of 22 gold medals. 4 of those have come in this year’s Rio Olympics, with wins in 200m medley, 200m butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x200m freestyle relay.
He could also win another gold in the 100m butterfly after qualifying for Saturday’s final shortly after his 200m medley victory.
What makes him the perfect swimmer?
Many have pointed out he has a perfect physique for swimming, and they’re not wrong.

There have been myths out there to try and explain his success. Some have even claimed that Phelps has double the lung capacity of an average man. There’s however no evidence of this.
As much as physical attributes help, they are not everything. You also need the talent, technique and like Phelps, excellent stroke mechanics.
