First Batch Of The Standard Gauge Railway Locomotives Is Handed Over To Kenyan Government

Delivery of the locomotives to be used in the railway has began, the first batch was handed over to a Kenyan government  in China this  weekend.In a  ceremony held at the assembly plant, two passenger locomotives and four freight locomotives were handed over.

Operations for the freight locomotives is set to begin in June 2017 but passenger transport will have to wait until early 2018.

The standard gauge railway is the biggest project of the Kenyan Government so far.The government  is committed to providing cheap transport to Kenyans.The Phase I of the SGR is almost complete despite many challenges that have befallen the Project.

onstruction works for the second phase of the Standard Gauge Railway project were officially launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta with a ceremony at the Embulbul work site in Ngong Town on October 19.

Phase 2A covers the 120 km Nairobi – Naivasha section of the 2 937 km MoKaKi corridor. It was approved by the government in May 2015, in order to serve a new economic development zone in the Rift Valley. The US$1·5bn project is being funded by a loan from the Chinese government.
