This Week in Tech: LG Opens an Online Shopping Platform and More Weekly Tech Trends
The tech world ended the week well. Good things have happened this week: A good number being local while the rest international.
Let’s look at the top ten tech trends this week:
1. Shop Online Courtesy of LG
LG Electronics has tapped into the e-commerce business.
The company has opened an online store called LG Brand Shop.
The online shopping platform will stock the company’s products such as refrigerators, TVs, microwaves, washing machines, and much more.
At the moment, the company is yet to stock smartphones.
2. Safaricom Launches a Digital Solution for Farmers
Connected Farmer is a product launched by Safaricom’s Business, the company’s enterprise division.
This product aims to improve agricultural processes such as processing businesses in production planning.
This solution is based on an app and a web client and will act as a communication line for farmers.
It will make use of existing solutions such as MPesa to enhance business between farmers and companies/organizations.
3. MasterCard and Western Union target Kakuma Refugee Camp
MasterCard and Western Union seem to have come to the realization that refugees can be valuable consumer assets.
The two companies are said to be thinking in the direction of mobile and digital payments for the Kakuma Refugee Camp.
The camp is estimated to be home to over 150,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers.
4. StarTimes Media Spreads its Wings
StarTimes Media has expanded coverage to rural Kenya in an effort to increase its subscriber base. This is also part of its growth plan.
The pay-tv provider will now be available in Garissa, Kitui, Kapenguria, Embu, Trans-Nzoia, and Laikipia counties.
5. The 2017 Cybercrimes Bill Gazetted
The Computer and Cybercrimes Bill has been officially published in the Kenya Gazette, the official government publication.

6. You Will Access Loan Fees and Charges Online
The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) in collaboration with the Central Bank of Kenya has launched Cost of Credit website.
The website offers information on loan products and their associated fees and charges.
This means that customers can easily choose the lender with the best terms.
7. Cisco Introduces us to the Network of the Future
Cisco has unveiled a network that can learn, adapt, and evolve.
This is part of the multinational’s vision to create a system that can anticipate actions, stop security threats, and continue to evolve.
The network is expected to help businesses unlock new opportunities and solve challenges that could not be overcome earlier.
8. Google Glass Gets an Update Three Years Later
Google Glass, a wearable by Google, just got an update for the first time in three years.
This could mean that it is returning from the dead after all.
The device has its first firmware update which will bring support for pairing with Bluetooth devices.
The update also includes other minor tweaks and bug fixes.
9. Bad News for Android 2.1 and Older
Google has announced that it has ended support for Android version 2.1 and older.
The Android Market for older phones is quite small but Google has maintained it, until now.
Those whose devices run on Android 2.2 or newer will use the Play Store.
10. Infinix Note 4 Leaks
Infinix Note 4 is yet to be unveiled but we already know that it will rock a massive 4,300mAh battery.
The handset comes with 5.7-inch display, 2GB RAM, 13MP main camera, and comes with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.
