Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017: Biggest Announcements

1023

The Mobile World Congress 2017 gave us a sneak peek of a list of exciting smartphones. The world’s biggest smartphone mega-show started on February 27th and ends on the 2nd March 2017.

Each year has been different but the bottom line is that the theme is the same.

Various phone manufacturers came out to give us an early look at what we can expect from them in coming months.
Let’s delve into what we have been presented with so far!

1. BlackBerry KEYone

This handset is the first of a series set to be released later this year. So, does it bring it?

The handset comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, Octa-core 2.0GHz Adreno 506 GPU, 4.5-inch display with 1620×1080 resolution, 3GB RAM, 12MP rear camera, and 3505mAh battery capacity.

The keyboard takes us back to the good old times. Those who have been clamoring for a sleek handset with a QWERTY keyboard do not have to wait anymore.

2. LG G6

LG had its share of trouble last year, but this year should be better especially since the company has started off on a sleek note.

LG G6 is nothing like most of its buddies in the LG lineup. The G6 sports great features, good enough to make us overlook past frustrations. How good you ask?

The handset is expected to be announced during the 2017 Mobile World Congress.

It comes with Android 7.0 Nougat, powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, 5.7-inch LCD display with 2880×1440 resolution, 4GB RAM, 13MP rear camera, and 3300mAh non-removable battery.

It also comes with the IP68 water and dust resistance technology. I bet that’s a great start for LG.

3. Sony Xperia XZ Premium, XZs, XA 1, XA 1 Ultra

Sony Xperia XZ

Sony has always managed to set itself apart. It’s like that one friend who solely focuses on herself and minds her own business. Well, at least often.

In case you are wondering, the Xperia series upholds the Sony tradition as they come with unique thinness, sleek style, and high resolution.

The XZ Premium and XZs are exciting handsets though I am not totally sold to the naming. Not Yet. Maybe never.

One of the most outstanding features in Xperia XZ Premium is that it comes with a 4K display that supports HDR.

It comes with 5.5-inch display, 3840×2160-pixel resolution, Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB RAM, 19MP rear camera, and IP68 water and dust resistance technology.

For those who are excited about camera features, this handset comes with super slow-mo camera features.

Xperia XZs sports 5.2-inch display with a 1080×1920 pixel resolution, runs on Android v7.1 Nougat, 4GB RAM, 19MP rear camera, and a 2900mAh non-removable battery.

Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra are budget smartphones with midrange specs. Pretty sure that gives you a rough idea of what that means.

4. Alcatel A5

Alcatel is the latest company to integrate modularity in its phone. Alcatel A5’s rear supports three accessories: audio speaker, battery pack, and a programmable LED cover that will light up in case of a notification.

Alcatel also announced Alcatel A3 and Alcatel U5.

Alcatel A5 comes with a 5.2-inch display, 1280×720 resolution, 2GB RAM, 8MP rear camera, built-in non-removable 2800mAh battery, and Octa-core 1.5GHz processor.

Alcatel U5 comes with 5-inch display, 4G LTE capabilities, 480×854 pixel resolution, Quad-core 1.1GHz, IGB RAM, 5MP rear camera, and 2050mAH battery.

Alcatel A3 packs a 5-inch HD display, 720×1280 pixel resolution, Quad-core 1.25 GHz MediaTek 6737 processor, 13MP rear camera, and 2460mAh battery.

The three handsets run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and while this is annoying in 2017, the handsets are low cost. They betcha, especially considering their specifications and features.

5. Nokia 3, 5, and 6

You read that right! The 2017 Mobile World Congress reintroduced us to BlackBerry and Nokia phones.

The Nokia model names may not be that catchy but at least easy to remember nonetheless.

Nokia 3 is a low-end handset that comes with a 5-inch display with a 720×1280 pixel resolution. The handset is powered by a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 2650mAH battery, and 8M rear camera. The good news is that the handset runs on Android 7.0.

Nokia 5 is a bit powerful than A3. It comes with a 5.2-inch display, a 1280×720 pixel resolution, runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset, 2GB RAM, 13MP camera, and 3000mAh battery. It is powered by Android v7.1.1 Nougat.

Nokia 6 is a top-end handset. It was launched in January in China but it should now reach other markets in various parts of the world. It comes with a 5.5-inch display, a 1920×1080 resolution, 3GB RAM, and 16MP rear camera.

6. Huawei p10, Huawei P10+

Huawei also took to the podium at MWC 2017 and unveiled Huawei P10 and Huawei P10+. P10 is a mid-range handset with P10+ is a sleek top-tier handset.

An important thing that should not go unnoticed is that Huawei went an extra mile to spoil its consumers with choices with regard to colors.

Huawei P10 comes with 5.1-inch display, 4GB RAM, dual 20MP + 12MP primary camera, runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, and 3200mAh battery.

P10 Plus comes with 5.5-inch display, 1440×2560 resolution, Kirin 960 processor, dual 20MP + 12MP primary camera, 6GB RAM, and 3750mAh battery.

Final Thoughts

In all honesty, the handsets unveiled during the Mobile World Congress 2017 are welcome but did not come with life-changing technology.

Still, it was nice to see various tech giants in one setting.
