An Ethiopian swimmer at the Olympics has become the laughing stock of the internet.

Robel Kiros Habte finished last in the 100m heats, half a lap behind everyone else.

Out of the 59 competitors, the 24 year old was ranked 59th with a time of 1 minute 4.95 seconds.

In a field dominated by slim and physically fit individuals, Robel was branded ‘overweight and embarrassingly slow’.

It is unclear how he got into the Olympics, but there are some reports that he is the son of the Ethiopian Swimming Federation President.

That, however, did not bother him.

‘I am so happy because it is my first competition in the Olympics,’ he said. ‘So thanks for God.’

He added:

‘I wanted to do something different for my country, that’s why I chose swimming.

‘Everybody, every day you wake up in Ethiopia, you run. Not swimming. But I didn’t want to run, I wanted to be a swimmer.

‘It didn’t matter where I finished.’
