NTSA Impounds 13 Vehicles in Southern Bypass Crackdown Over Multiple Traffic Violations

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has impounded 13 vehicles along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass following an overnight road safety crackdown that exposed multiple traffic violations, including drunk driving, expired driving licences and vehicles operating without valid insurance.

The operation, conducted on Wednesday night, October 28, 2026, involved a multi-agency enforcement team targeting motorists and vehicles that pose risks to other road users.

In an update issued on Thursday, October 29, NTSA confirmed that 13 motor vehicles had been detained during the compliance exercise as authorities intensified efforts to improve road safety across the country.

Drunk Driving, Expired Licences Among Violations

According to NTSA, officers identified several violations involving both drivers and vehicle conditions during the Southern Bypass operation.

Some motorists were found driving under the influence of alcohol or operating vehicles with expired driving licences.

Other violations involved vehicles with expired inspection stickers, those operating without valid insurance and vehicles whose insurance arrangements did not comply with their terms.

Inspectors also identified vehicles with broken headlights and cracked windscreens, defects that can compromise visibility and increase the risk of road accidents, particularly at night.

NTSA Intensifies Night-Time Road Safety Inspections

The Southern Bypass crackdown is part of NTSA’s broader road safety campaign dubbed Msimu Bila Ajali, Usalama Barabarani.

The campaign brings together NTSA and other law enforcement agencies to conduct daytime and overnight compliance checks along major transport corridors.

Night-time enforcement has been prioritised because reduced visibility, speeding, driver fatigue and drunk driving can increase the risks associated with road travel.

NTSA says the inspections are intended to identify dangerous driving behaviour, ensure vehicles meet roadworthiness requirements and prevent avoidable road fatalities.

Motorists approaching designated checkpoints have been urged to slow down and cooperate with enforcement officers.

Speed Limiters and PSV Operators Also Under Scrutiny

Beyond the Southern Bypass operation, NTSA’s expanded enforcement programme covers several other areas of road safety compliance.

Officers are expected to inspect vehicle speed limiters and establish whether the devices are functioning correctly and continuously transmitting data to the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS).

Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators, particularly those involved in long-distance transport, are also subject to additional checks.

These include:

  • Valid Road Service Licences (RSLs).
  • Valid driving licences and PSV badges.
  • Passenger manifests and driver working-hour records.
  • Compliance with authorised passenger capacity.
  • Compliance with permitted vehicle load limits.
  • Valid vehicle inspection stickers.
  • Proper functioning of speed limiters.

Drivers may also undergo breathalyser tests as part of efforts to identify and discourage drink-driving.

Passengers have similarly been reminded to wear seatbelts throughout their journeys.

Road Fatalities Raise Concern as NTSA Steps Up Enforcement

The latest Southern Bypass crackdown comes amid growing concern over road fatalities in Kenya.

According to figures reported by The Standard, NTSA recorded 3,995 road deaths between January 1 and October 4, 2026, compared with 3,657 during the same period in 2025, representing an increase of approximately 9.2 per cent.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) also reported that road deaths increased from 4,748 in 2024 to 5,009 in 2025.

The rising figures have intensified calls for stronger enforcement, improved driver accountability and better road safety measures.

NTSA has called for road crashes to be declared a national disaster to mobilise additional resources and coordinated government intervention.

What Motorists Should Check to Avoid NTSA Enforcement

Following the latest Southern Bypass vehicle crackdown, motorists are encouraged to ensure that their vehicles and driving documents comply with applicable traffic regulations.

Before using the road, drivers should confirm that:

  1. Their driving licences are valid.
  2. Their vehicles have valid insurance coverage.
  3. Required vehicle inspection certificates and stickers are up to date.
  4. Headlights, brake lights and indicators are functioning properly.
  5. Windscreens are in good condition and provide clear visibility.
  6. Vehicles are mechanically sound and roadworthy.
  7. They are not driving under the influence of alcohol.
  8. They observe speed limits and maintain safe following distances.

PSV operators should additionally ensure that their vehicles meet passenger safety, licensing and operational requirements.

Motorists should also be cautious of fraudulent messages claiming to originate from NTSA. The authority has reminded the public that official speed violation notifications are sent through the SMS sender ID NTSA.

NTSA Crackdown Sends Warning to Nairobi Motorists

The detention of 13 vehicles along the Southern Bypass highlights the authority’s renewed focus on identifying motorists who disregard road safety requirements.

With enforcement extending to night-time inspections, speed monitoring, vehicle roadworthiness and public transport compliance, motorists should expect increased scrutiny along major roads.

The ongoing Msimu Bila Ajali, Usalama Barabarani campaign serves as a reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility involving drivers, passengers, vehicle owners and transport operators.

Ultimately, compliance with traffic regulations is not simply about avoiding vehicle impoundment or penalties. It is about protecting lives and making Kenyan roads safer for everyone.
