In attendance were the Rohto Mentholatum (K) Limited Country director Ms. Fumiko Akojima, Charity Mwangi, former Miss World Kenya 2016, skin care experts, the media, and several Rohto Metholatum Group Kenya staff members.

Ms. Mwangi kicked off the session by talking about her skin care routine and the important role it plays in her status as a beauty queen.

John Macharia, the company’s marketing officer, also had a chance to explain Rohto Metholatum Group’s various products and their functions

During the event, the invitees got a chance to share their skin problem stories and learn how to overcome embarrassing skin conditions such as dandruff, pimples, and blemishes.

The most interesting part of the session has to be when a skin care expert took to the stage to debunk myths associated with acne and dandruff.

This session was insightful as the invitees got a chance to share their own beliefs or hearsay.

The company manufactures acne treatment products as well as post acne care and prevention.

Some of the companies’ products are Mentholatum Acnes Creamy Wash, Mentholatum Acnes Soothing Toner, and Mentholatum Acnes Sealing Gel, Deep Heat, Deep Freeze, and Selsum, and Rootia.

Established in 1889 as a small family drugstore, today, the company operates in over 130 countries and has claimed a notable niche.

Rohto launched its operations in Kenya in 2016 and has since then earned a place in the market.

At the end of the session, Ms. Fumiko Akojima thanked attendees and offered each a gift bag with goodies.

The gift bag contained some of the companies’ products such scar care, Selsun, creamy wash, toner, and sealing gel.

I have used the creamy wash and toner and so far so good, no reactions. Guess it’s specially formulated for the African skin as they said.

Overall, it was interesting to listen to people share their skin care routines and their secrets to flawless skin.

Youth Employment Opportunities in Kenya

Youth employment opportunities are hard to come by in Kenya.

A while back the hashtag #JobCrisisKE was trending on Twitter in Kenya, and one of the most profound comments under the tag was, ‘It is easier for a chopper to land on your head than get a job in Kenya’.

This sad reality is even worse for Form four leavers and fresh graduates who have so much free time in their hands but don’t know what next.

Here are some full and part-time Youth Employment Opportunities:

1. Volunteering

Volunteer opportunities in Kenya for youths are so many; the only problem is most people do not want to do anything for free.

Note that as a young person, it is of more value to volunteer in NGOs, companies, institutes and learn the skills, and then, later on, you can trade your skills for the money.

Even better is the connections and contacts you get to make in the course of your work.

Organizations such as the Red Cross, Onward Kenya, Youth Alive and Peace Ambassadors Kenya are always looking for volunteers.

2. Start A Business

Where will the money come from? Youth Enterprise Development Fund!

This fund was specifically set up so that Kenyan youths could access loans to facilitate their business ideas.

Take advantage of such opportunities, it is even easier to get the loan if you apply as a group.

The YEDF is one of Kenya youth empowerment projects, also providing mentorship, guidance, consultation in case you are not sure how to go about it.

For loan application forms and instructions, check the YEDF website.

Additionally, Ministry of gender and youth affairs in Kenya provides further support for upcoming youth enterprise with the Uwezo Fund.

3. Join a Youth Organization

The number of youth organizations in Kenya that young people can join are limitless.

A good example is Youth Alive Kenya which also has exchange programs that not only give you ground experience in organizing and working with fellow youths but also exposes you to new environments and challenges.

Youth Alive Kenya contacts and program application forms can be found on their website.

4. Use Your Talents and Skills To Make Money

Can you write? Then get writing opportunities and start working! If you are a good painter, artist, host, there are opportunities awaiting if you look closer.

Even better, do you have technical skills like a good tailor, a good mason, a good cook? Then look out for people and organizations who would do with some of your skills!

Also, with technical skills, you could get a job as a polytechnic instructor! You never know how far what you can do can get you, the secret is starting.

Always be on the lookout for vacancies focusing on the skills you already possess.

5. Get Internship

The best way to start out in your dream career is by interning in a relevant organization.

This way, you get to learn the skills first hand from people who are already doing what you’d like to do with yourself.

There are internship opportunities that pay, and those that don’t.

At the end of the day, however, it is more important to gain the experience first, then get the money later.

In any case, it is less likely for an employer to pay a person with zero skills to do a job.

Getting a job in Kenya may be tough, but if you try out the above-mentioned ideas, you’d find it easier walking that road.

The most important thing is starting out; don’t over think it, just start. The rest will follow.

Maybe it’s time to stop saying that youth employment opportunities in Kenya are few since there is always something we can do.

Latest Fashion Trends in Kenya 2017

Kenyans are usually quick to pick up and adopt new fashion trends, and as the New Year started they did not miss out on the latest fashion trends of 2017.

Here are some of the clothes and accessories Kenyans have been rocking since the year began;

Swanky Sunglasses

sunglass

Credits to this fashion trend could be given to the dry, hot month of January. The sun is up, and the best protection for your eyes is a nice, trendy pair of fashionable sunglasses.

A few Kenyans have taken it a notch higher, with some adopting eyeglasses with colorful rims to keep up with the fashion.

This trend is surely not going away anytime soon, seeing as the dry weather has continued into February.

Dashiki (Ankara) Hoodie

ankara hoodie

This is definitely the most popular fashion piece in the country right now.

The dashiki hoodie has been rocked by celebrities and the common Mwananchi alike, with the same design coming in different materials.

This hoodie is prominently featured on Kenyan fashion stores like Jumia and Kilimall, going for as low as kes. 2000.

In the streets of Nairobi, one can purchase the dashiki hoodie for as low as kes. 1000.

Ankara t-shirts, tops, Pants

ankara top

The Ankara craze in Kenya does not end with the dashiki hoodie, Kenyans are spoiling themselves silly with Ankara clothing of all designs and types.

From pants to crop tops to men’s fashion t-shirts, to shoes, it does not end. Those who are fashion savvy and a little more creative have gone even a notch higher, by creating beautiful Ankara handbag pieces, watch bands and wallets.

Official Suits!

This comes so unexpectedly of our young Kenyan men and women.

For a long time, Kenyan men fashion has leaned towards trendy shirts and pants, and when it comes to shoes, boots have been it.

This year, however, more men are rocking official suits, complete with the tie, cufflinks and pocket squares in place. Surprised that fall under the latest fashion trends? Bet not.

Celebrities such as King Kaka and Holy Dave have been at the forefront in making the official suave man look a fashion trend.

The year has just begun, as days unfold we will be able to see Kenyans unveiling more fashion trends, some interesting and some just- NOT.

It is usually the young people who come with the surprises, so let’s wait and see what the rest of the year has in store!

Court Orders IEBC to Extend Voter Registration

The High Court has directed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) to extend the voter registration exercise by two days despite its Valentine’s day deadline by two days.

The directive was issued by a High Court Judge, Enoch Mwita Chacha, following a petition filed by activist Okiya Omtatah under the certificate of urgency.

During the hearing, Omtata argued:

“the law only requires the exercise to be stopped two months to a general election,” citing section 5(1)(a) of the Elections ACT 2011.

Justice Mwita then directed the activist to immediately serve the commission with suit papers.

Previously, the members of parliament had argued that the constitution allows voter registration to continue at Huduma Centres and IEBC constituency offices across the country.

The IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati had previously insisted that there would be no extension for the voter registration period which 14th February was the deadline. This was meant to give IEBC enough time to prepare for the general elections.

“If we continue to register after February 14, there will be limited time to do the clean-up which is slated for February 14 to May 10,” said the chairman.

Under the certificate of urgency filed by the activist Okiya Omtatah requesting the court to compel IEBC voter registration deadline extension, he also requested the court to compel the IEBC to register voters using birth certificates and expired passports.

He asked the court to declare a single database of citizens which should be used to transact all affairs affecting citizens. He also said that the separate registrations for exams ID, KRA PIN, and Passports were unreasonable and a waste of public funds.

“By wasting resources running multiple databases of citizens, the respondents are in violation of Article 201 (D) that public money shall be used in a prudent and responsible way,” Omtatah argued.

He said that without full disclosure it was impossible to tell whether the IEBC’s estimated targets for registering voters in various parts of the country was independent.

He argued that there was a possibility of mischief from the executive to suppress voters in some areas because it was not verifiable if the official data of the adult population from the Directorate of Immigration and Registration of Persons based on the 2009 census was used.

Omtatah argued that the IEBC needed to distance itself from the executive government by letting the public know how widespread the discriminative issuance of IDs is and how it disenfranchises unsuspecting citizens.

The matter is set to be mentioned on the 16th of this month.

It offers subscription packages as follows: one month for $30, $85 for 3 months, $150 for 6 months, and $240 for one year.

Not sure how many Kenyans will pay but I am guessing those who are seriously searching do not mind parting with a few coins.

Uber Kenya Updates its App: What You Should Know

Uber Kenya has updated its ehailing app. The updates are part of the company’s effort to improve user experience through simpler app interactions.

One of the most notable upgrades is the inclusion of a “where to” feature. This function will be an important part of user experience and Uber hopes that it will save time by automatically alerting users about their current location.

This also comes with an upfront pricing feature that will inform users about the service fee beforehand. With this feature, a user is expected to feed the app with their pickup and drop off point to automatically get the upfront fares.

The company says that upfront fares are calculated by considering several factors including expected time, distance, traffic conditions, and the availability of services/driver partners.

Once a user arrives at his or her destination, they are issued with a receipt reflecting the upfront fare. What if my boss calls midway and I am forced to make a stop? Uber has got you covered as well.

In this case, fares will be calculated using the original time and distance rates.

The company management says that since part of its philosophy is to offer its customers a seamless experience, it will continue to reinvent itself.

Before you get too excited about the new features, note that surge pricing still applies. Fares will still increase from time to time. Users have to approve the cost in advance before requesting a ride.

Uber has over time surprised its customers. In 2016, the company introduced UberFORALL and UberEVENTS. UberEVENTS ensures your guests get to your party or event on time.

UberFORALL is a loyalty program that seeks to reward customers, fans, and followers on Twitter every Wednesday. The hashtag for this is #UberFOALL. The food department has also been considered.

Snaptchat Filters

The updates feature also comes with Uber Snapchat filters. This allows riders to unlock custom Uber filters as they enjoy Uber rides.

This feature targets the younger tech savvy generation-That’s nifty because I really don’t see a 49-year old taking interest in such.

The Uber Snapchat integration allows Uber riders to send photos with custom features to their family or friends. According to Uber, this will save you the hustle of having to toggle between apps to access Snapchat.

These filters will give your friend access to information such as where you are going and your estimated ETA. FYI, ETA stands for Estimates Time of Arrival.

In case you are wondering. This function is not automatic since the user has to allow the app to share such information. The feature works with contacts in the users’ phonebook.

The ehailing company has faced competition since it was launched in Kenya; hence, the upgrades are likely to prompt key competitors such as Safaricom’s Little Cab to revamp their ehailing apps.

It would not be shocking to learn that Safaricom is in the kitchen cooking something new and exciting for its riders.

It’s 2017 and we can only expect bigger, better and exciting things from other key players in the ehailing industry. We can all agree that Uber’s upfront pricing is a welcome development.

“Will be rewarded for their patriotism, including visiting with me at state house”

Well, guess we won’t be dabbing to anything.

HP Recalls 100K Laptop Batteries over fire concerns

HP is the latest company to recall batteries. The headline “HP recalls over 100,000 lithium-ion batteries over fire concerns” has been doing rounds for some time now.

It seems that Samsung is not the only tech giant that has faced fire woes. However, HP has been on the bandwagon of recalling faulty batteries for quite some time now.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission released a statement that suggested that the batteries would be recalled for safety reasons.

In June 2016, HP recalled 41,000 batteries in the US but it has decided to expand the recall involving lithium-ion batteries in HP notebooks. These were shipped between 2013 and 2016.

The second recall was prompted by reports of an overheated system that caused charring and resulted in damage to property.

In a statement, the commission added that consumers should immediately stop using batteries affected by the recall.

It further advised them to remove the batteries and plug them into AC power should they want to use their notebooks.

A spokesperson from HP confirmed that the faulty battery problem affected less than 1% of all HP laptops sold within the recall period.

The recall affects laptops under the HP brand and Compaq.

How do I know if my HP is affected by this recall?

Well, devices affected include HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP Envy, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion laptops. The replacement of the faulty HP batteries is done at no cost. And rightly so.

Moreover, the official HP recall battery list can be identified using bar codes. HP has provided bar codes of batteries that may be affected.

The patterns are: 6BZLU, 6CGFK, 6CGFQ, 6CZMB, 6DEMA, 6DEMH, 6DGAL, and 6EBVA.

This is not the first HP batteries recall since the company has a history of recalling its notebook batteries.

In 2011, the company recalled over 162,000 notebook batteries.

That’s not all; the company had recalled batteries in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010. In May 2009, the company recalled 54,000 batteries. The 2016 HP battery recalls did not, therefore, come as a surprise.

Apart from Samsung and HP recalls, other companies such as Garmin and Sony have recalled products. Sony, for instance, recalled 535,000 Vaio laptops over overheating issues in 2010.

It is a bit puzzling that giant manufacturers continue to release faulty products in the market. It seems that they do not do proper testing on each unit.

Consumers should never have to worry that a device might put them at risk but the numerous reports of recalls are not reassuring.

It’s a high time that electronic companies improve safety standards for their products.

Greater emphasis needs to be placed on battery safety since it is becoming increasingly scary to purchase products from some brands.

While Samsung was applauded for its accountability and transparency during the Note 7 recall, there is the need to improve the standards of developing the lithium-ion batteries.

Recalls of batteries and other electronic products should not be a thing in 2017.

Companies and consumer organizations should work together to ensure that there is no repeat of past recalls in the New Year.

Facebook rolls out plan to curb fake news

Mark Zuckerberg is rolling out strategies to curb Facebook fake news.

This comes after pressure, backlash, and allegations that the giant tech firm has not done enough to deal with the problem.

Fake news stories deluged the platform in 2016 with the most notable being news related to the 2016 US presidential election.

It has been alleged that Facebook played a role in Donald Trump’s victory. Mark Zuckerberg downplayed such claims despite President Trump saying explicitly that Facebook played an important role in his victory.

There were also many fabricated hoaxes whose objective was to appeal to conservatives.

Mark Zuckerberg downplayed such claims despite President Trump saying explicitly that Facebook played an important role in his victory.

There were also many fabricated hoaxes whose objective was to appeal to conservatives.

There are numerous Facebook fake news examples including the allegation that Denzel Washington has publicly backed Donald Trump, Pope Francis had endorsed Trump, and that a federal investigator who has been investigating Hilary Clinton had been found dead.

These are just but a few examples of stories that impelled people to make a connection between Facebook fake news and the election outcome.

The decision to introduce new tools comes after months of pressure from various parties. These tools are meant to stop news stories from spreading.

Facebook has stressed that the new features will be part of an ongoing process to refine methods of dealing with fake news.

The new tools will enable users to flag fake articles that appear in their news feed. They can flag news as a hoax.

This will be achieved through collaboration with organizations such as ABC News and Associated Press.

Also, the new tools will help improve sharing analytics, tackling spammers, and ensure that users in the same region see the same topics.

Earlier, the list of trending topics was personalized based on users’ interests but this will no longer be the case.

Currently, the giant firm is updating its “trending” feature.

Previously, the trending section was based on user engagement and it highlighted popular stories and topics.

The changes will include identification of the publisher below each topic.

Facebook will also seek to identify trending topics and establish which publishers are discussing such topic.

This, according to Facebook, will help identify and reflect real world news events covered by authentic news outlets.

These changes will be rolled out in various parts of the world successively.

When discussing how the upgrade will help in dealing with fake news and hoaxes, Facebook vice president, Will Cathcart, said that the updated system would identify groups of articles shared on its platform instead of solely banking on mentions.

Facebook says that if and when news are flagged as hoaxes or disputed and an article explaining why is attached, they may appear lower in the news feed.

Flagged stories cannot be promoted.

In 2016, Facebook introduced an anti-clickbait algorithm. This involved demoting articles that contained certain headlines.

Clickbait headlines aim to lure readers into clicking article titles that withhold important information or exaggerate leading to over expectations.

Here’s an example:

“She put toothpaste in a blackhead before going to bed and what happened next was shocking.”

This is just one example of millions of Facebook fake news articles that the platform has accommodated over the past.

Zuckerberg has assured Facebook users that they will soon be able to flag Facebook fake news and hoaxes.

He added that one of the tech giant’s goals is to show people useful and valuable content.

Skeptics have alleged that Facebook cannot stop fake news and hoaxes since it cannot possibly monitor and confirm the authenticity of all news articles.

They add that leaders should not see Facebook’s efforts as a respite as they will continue to be victims of fake news.

The process of trying to deal with the Facebook fake news problem and hoaxes comes at a time when a big percentage of Facebook users admit to depending on Facebook for news.

The giant social media company hopes that the updates will ensure that its users consume quality news.

We can only hope that a refined Facebook fake news detector will be introduced to curb the problem once and for all.

10 Reasons Why Finding A Good Man In Kenya is Tough

Gone are the days when men were responsible, mature, caring adults whose goal in life was to get a good education, buy a house and car, and settle down with a god woman.

Today’s generation of men is nothing but a disaster.

Here’s why;

  1. They are bonafide members of ‘#TeamMafisi’

Or at least he claims to be. #TeamMafisi means men who are on the hunt for the next beautiful girl, the next big derriere or big bust.

The man who confidently claims to belong to this group is basically saying he is not ready to settle with one woman.

  1. They still live in his mother’s house

Which means, he is not ready for ‘responsibilities’ Even if he claims he is, and tries, this man will expect you to treat him like you are his momma.

Get his clothes washed and ironed, his shoes spotlessly clean, his socks in order, cook for him and spoon-feed him.

He is just a big fat toddler.

  1. Kenyan men are jobless

And is not looking for employment. Not because he has plans of following other interests, but simply because he wants to chill and be cool and feed off his father’s hard earned money.

This is not a good man.

  1. They call women/girls ‘hoes’

Run away from this man. He has no respect for the female species, forgetting that his own mother is actually a woman.

He thinks the only thing girls are after is his empty pockets.

Don’t be fooled by his ‘you are not like the rest of them’ statements when he is done with you, you will be part of ‘the rest of them’.

Just another hoe added to his list.

  1. Kenyan men don’t read

A man who doesn’t read is most probably an empty man.

We live in a world where so much information is stored in books and on the Internet, that it is baffling for a man who doesn’t actually read anything that has more than 100 words to claim possession of vast knowledge and intellect.

A man who reads is a smart man.

  1. They gamble themselves into debt

Betting companies are making a killing out of these men’s sheer ignorance and greed. A man will get a loan of KSH20,000 only to spend all of it trying to win a jackpot.

Because he won’t win, he becomes KSH.20,000 poorer, money that he could have otherwise invested elsewhere. This type of man will gamble your rent money, salon money, shopping money and money you intend to send to your parents.

  1. They have female ‘besties’

It is bad enough to date a man who has declared himself a member of #TeamMafisi, but it is worse dating a man with a female best friend.

This type of relationship constantly feels like you are in a competition of some sort with the female best friend.

Not healthy at all.

  1. Kenyan men drink too much

It is a source of pride actually to them.

Since you might not be able to keep up with the partying and ‘getting lit’, you will have to bear through listening to the morning-after tales of how the night went down.

Of course, if he went out with his boys, there are details of the events of the night that you will never get to hear about.

This man is not a keeper, spending money drinking and getting ‘turnt up’ every night is not a plan for a grown man.

  1. They are stingy

Kenyan men have made themselves believe that women are only after their money, this means at the start of a relationship he will try to put you to ‘the test’ by withdrawing any financial support.

All this in a bid to prove whether you are a gold-digger or in for the long run. This act, however, shows the type of man you are dating; an insecure paranoid grown-up.

  1. They lack ambition

Ask a Kenyan man what his plans for the next 5 years are, and he doesn’t know. The current generation of men lacks ambition, tact and a plan for their lives.

They are just getting by, taking every day as it comes, which is not really a bad thing, but every human being has a mental picture of what they see themselves becoming in the next few years.

A man without vision and plan lacks direction.

Society is quick to lay blame on women who fail to get married, saying they probably are not good enough for the men. What we fail to note is that the men are not any good as well!

Goals have shifted, ambitions crushed, and all men want to do is get a woman who can mother them.

Chei!
