Huawei P10 ready for pre-order in Kenya

You can now pre-order Huawei P10 in Kenya. The pre-order runs until April 30th.

The company had promised to launch P10 in Kenya this April but this has been pushed to April.

The handset is set to hit local stores in May. Huawei P10 was officially unveiled at this year’s Mobile World Congress alongside P10+.

What’s Huawei P10 price in Kenya you ask? Ksh. 65,000. Per unit. Only!

As an incentive, the first 100 people who preorder the handset will get a free tablet worth Ksh. 13,000.This tablet comes with 4GB RAM and a three-month warranty. This is definitely strategic on the part of Huawei.

But there is a downside:

First, you will not have the option to choose your preferred color. The units for pre-order only come in gold.

This is definitely demotivating since this handset comes in several fancy colors. These will only be available once the P10 is launched locally in May.

I also have a problem with the price. Yes, the handset comes with awesome features and fancy colors but this does not justify the price.

Plus, the price tag of Huawei P9 was much lower. It’s a big jump. It’s a hefty price tag.

It is, however, important to investigate whether P20 offers enough to compete with premium handsets of lower or equivalent price.

The most outstanding of them all being the 12MP + 20MP Leica branded dual camera at the rear and the 8MP selfie camera.

Huawei P10 vs. Huawei P9

When P9 was first launched in 2016, it joined the league of standout handsets from the company.

The handset cemented the company’s status as a major player in the smartphone market.

P9 comes with a 5.2-inch IPS LCD display while p10 comes with 5.1-inch IPS-Neo LCD Capacitive display. P9 may have come with a larger screen but P10 comes with a better screen technology.

The IPS-neo LCD is an upgrade from IPS LCD since it focuses on true-black appearance.

The latter did not give the best experience when viewed from a slanted angle.

On the other hand, the IPS-neo adopts a photo-alignment technology that gives a better experienced even from a slanted angle.

When it comes to memory, p10 comes with 4GB RAM while P9 came with 3GB RAM.

The battery capacities in both handsets are not impressive. P10 comes with 3,200mAh capacity while P9 comes with 3,000mAh. This is not good. At all.

Both handsets come with awesome specs but Huawei decided to cut corners with the battery capacity. We will take it though.

In terms of operating system, P10 comes in Android 7.0 Nougat while P9 comes with Android 6 Marshmallow on board.

Luckily those with P9 can upgrade to Android 7 so no big deal here.

That’s all. In case you wish to pre-order P10 you have the go ahead.

If your color is gold, you are in luck since the pre-order option gives you just what you need.

We’ll just assume that the Ksh. 65,000 is pay for the incremental upgrades and fancy colors.

Audio call feature on Google Duo now available worldwide

Google Duo, the search engine’s video chat app, now supports voice calls, a feature that has now been rolled out worldwide.

Duo’s principle engineer Justin Uberti made a statement on his official twitter account.

The statement read:

“Google Duo’s new audio calling feature now available worldwide!”

Uberti has also stated that voice calling can be accessed by simply switching a toggle at the top of the app’s interface.

The upgrade comes barely one year after Google Duo was launched. It seems that Google was not going to let Duo remain just a video-chat app.

The video chatting feature is basic. It only allows you to make video calls and is only available for mobile devices.

You are not even required to have a Google account to use it.All you need is your phone number and your contact list.

The recipient has to be using Duo as well.

All you need is your phone number and your contact list. The recipient has to be using Duo as well.

Initially, it sounded strange that Google would integrate the audio feature to a platform that was originally designed for video calls but then again, it’s not such a bad idea.

In any case, why not give users the option to choose between video and audio options.

The feature enters a somewhat Competitive market

Duo is no longer just a video-calling app and this means that it has entered a new category.

The addition of the audio-only feature positions it to compete with the likes of Whatsapp and Facebook messenger.

Basically, platforms that now offers audio and video chat options have a new competitor.

Perhaps the only problem is that other services offer text messaging option while Google is yet to integrate that in Duo.

Allo would be a perfect addition to Google Duo that would increase its competitiveness with similar services. But I guess Google is comfortable scattering its messaging features.

It is imprudent to assume that Google will add a text messaging to Duo in the future.

Nevertheless, we cannot rule that option out since users may demand to have the feature added. In this case, Google would have no option but to oblige.

Audio calls are welcome, but how’s the user experience?

Video and audio calling features are welcome. Those who are not fans of one of them can always opt for the other.

But, there is a BUT.

It may be tricky to convince people to make calls via the new feature since other major applications have not been doing very well.

For instance, Whatsapp voice calls have not attracted a huge following.

So, will people not use their default apps in favor of Google Dou? Good question but the answer is not forthright.

Also, a good number of users have complained about dropped calls or echo on Whatsapp.

The trust level of these app calling features is yet to reach a desirable level. But then again, the service providers have continued to make improvements over time.

They are not yet there but they are definitely on the right track.

Regardless, Google’s investment in communication apps is commendable. You can choose between Hangout, Google Voice, or Duo.

Infinix S2 Pro Finally in Kenya, Introduces us to the Wefie Camera

Infinix S2 Pro is the latest smartphone from Infinix in Kenya. It is a successor to Infinix Hot S which entered the Kenyan market in 2016.

Infinix Hot S did not disappoint and that explains the excitement and buzz around Infinix S2 Pro.

You can order the handset on Jumia and you only have to part with Ksh. 15,699.

The handset is reasonably priced; hence, we cannot dwell on the price much. At least we can spare that time and talk about the wefie camera.

What’s in the wefie camera?

This has become a major selling point for S2 Pro and rightly so since this is an innovation.

Before we get into the whole wefie business, it’s good to point out that S2 Pro comes with dual-front facing a 13MP camera and an 8MP camera. This is the feature of interest.

The 13MP rear camera is awesome but it will not be the focus of this section.

The two front facing cameras do no work together as is the case with other cameras: they work independently to achieve different results.

The 8MP camera comes with a wide-angle lens which makes it possible or easier to have more people in the photos; hence, the label ‘Wefie’.

On the other hand, the 13MP camera is just like any other selfie smartphone camera. So worry not selfie lovers, you will still be able to take normal selfies.

S2 Pro out of the box

It’s always good to have an idea of what to expect in the box. Below is the list:
 Infinix S2 pro handset
 A pair of earphones
 Screen Protector
 USB cable data transfer and charging
 Charging adapter
 SIM ejector tool
 User manual

Earlier I had written an article on the key specs of S2 Pro; hence, you can always refer to the article for reference purposes.

The good?

The wefie is definitely a welcome innovation. It’s a new experience and the buzz around it makes it even more enviable.

The wide camera angles had raised the front camera technology to another level; hence, we can only expect better camera technologies from other smartphone manufacturers.

The fingerprint recognition is cool too.

Apart from unlocking S2 Pro, it supports several fingerprint-based apps and is able to unlock certain software via a fingerprint.

The result is a comprehensive protection of personal information.

If you are not sold on the whole idea of the bigger the better (with regard to smartphones of Couse), S2 Pro is an okay option.

The 5.2-inch display screen will meet your needs well. The 2.5D glass mounted on the screen gives it a sleekish look and feel.

The design is also okay. But we would not expect less from Infinix since it has a history of manufacturing gorgeous handsets. The Ksh. 15,699 handset has a premium look.

Maybe the only thing that we could have frowned upon is the Android Marshmallow but an Android Nougat update has been announced.

The update is currently being rolled out.

This comes at a time when the Hong Kong-based smartphone manufacturer is also rolling out Nougat updates for Infinix Hot S, Infinix Zero 4 and Zero 4 Plus, INfinix Hot 4, among others.

Overall, S2 Pro has revolutionized the camera technology as it has introduced a concept that makes us want to get our hands on it.

If and when I get my hands on the handset, I will definitely do a full review.

OLX SOMA Awards 2017 Nominees and Winners

Nominations for 2017 OLX Social Media Awards have opened.

Following the launch of this year’s OLX Social Media Awards (SoMA) Awards, Kenyans can now nominate individuals and organizations who have made significant positive impact on the society through the use of the various social media networks.

The annual OLX SoMA now in its fifth year has been supported by the online classified ad service, OLX Kenya, as the title sponsors since inception in 2013.

Other sponsors are Safaricom, Deloitte, Expose, and Vintage Concepts. The theme for this year’s Awards is Celebrating Five Years of Impact.

Speaking on the launch, SoMA Director Martin Muli said the influential Awards will focus on celebrating achievements that have been realized in the digital space since 2013 while creating awareness on the responsible use of social media ahead of the August General Elections.

Social media has helped transform lives by creating job and business opportunities and becoming an integral player in governance, healthcare, and retail businesses through speeding up delivery of services and accountability to the public.

“Brands have realized the potential of social media in engaging with their clients. They understand very well where the crowd is – and when they are online and active – in a bid to reach as many people as possible with their content,” said Muli.

Among the most popular social media platforms in Kenya are Facebook with over 6 million active users, Twitter (1.7million), Instagram (2 million), LinkedIn (I.3 million) and Snapchat, which is estimated to have about 500,000 members and still growing, according to latest statistics by the Communications of Authority of Kenya (CAK).

Commenting on the recent trends in social media, Muli noted that despite the digital revolution that has been witnessed in the country over the past decade some sections of the society especially women were yet to fully utilize social media opportunities to improve their careers and lives.

He disclosed that only 23 percent of total personality winners have been women for the past four years and pledged that there will be a lot of emphasis on creating awareness among women to get more of them to participate.

“Failure by majority women to tap into the digital revolution has impacted considerably on their ability to learn, access jobs, and enjoy improved livelihoods,” said Muli.

According to a survey on the digital gender gap in Kenya by World Bank GSMA Intelligence, the number of women using mobile internet in Kenya is 43% compared to 61% of men.

Only 42 % women who own smartphones and apps phones use Facebook and Wechat compared to 62% men. Similarly, only 51% of them are technically literate compared to 63% of men.

OLX Kenya Country Manager, Peter Ndiangúi commented:

“We are delighted to have another chance to shine the spotlight on the impact of the OLX Social Media Awards on the society for the last five years. We are relishing the opportunity to build on the success of these awards and to accelerate the growth of social media.”

The Awards give nominees recognition as leading players in the ICT industry and specifically in digital marketing.

It also validates individuals’ and organizations work and influence since it is a process that involves public nomination, shortlisting by judges and voting by the Online community.

“Invoking the Award that is won through a public vote also gives winners influence and respect and opportunity to up their rate card. Their influence is their currency. When their influence is validated amongst their peers by the community they engage, then their brand endorsement rates have to resonate,” said Ndiang’ui.

This year’s ceremony will be held in June and will recognize influential social media users in various categories including:

  • Social Network
  • Social Corporation/brands
  • Government
  • Media
  • Entertainment
  • Sports
  • Education institution
  • Most Influential Personalities in different fields

Some of the new categories include:

  • Fashion Personality Award
  • Entrepreneur Award
  • Humanitarian Award

Past winners include media personalities Larry Madowo, Jeff Koinange, Julie Gichuru and Caroline Mutoko, comedians and radio presenters Jalangó, and Churchill, Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua, Budalangi MP, Ababu Namwamba.

Social media enthusiasts can nominate their preferred individuals and organizations through the website: www.soma.or.ke. The deadline for the nominations is 30th   April 2017.

Tech Weekly Trends: NTSA to issue electronic driving Licenses starting May and more

Starting May, you will be issued with an electronic driving license by NTSA.

You may soon be allowed to smoke the “holy hub” if a proposition by one Gwada Ogot is taken with the seriousness it deserves. What does this have to do with technology you ask? This Forbes article will give you an idea.

A lot has taken place in just one week. Today, we woke up to the upsetting news of Sumgong’s doping results or of SportsPesa terminating KLP contractual deal.

Others are still trying to make sense of the Pepsi commercial.

But,

This did not stop awesome things from happening in the tech world.

What or who was making the loudest noise in the tech world?

1. NTSA to start issuance of electronic driving licenses

Starting May, NTSA will start issuing any licensed local driver with a digital driving license. The electronic card will bear your biometric information as well as an e-wallet that will allow you to pay instant fines in the event you commit a traffic offense and are caught.

The fine payment will be done via a special electronic gadget that is owned and managed by NTSA.

2. OPPO A57 the ‘Unstoppable Selfie’ to launch in Kenya

You will finally enjoy an ‘Unstoppable Selfie’ experience with the OPPO’s latest flagship.

The OPPO A57 is expected to enter the Kenyan market this April.

The handset comes with 16MP and 13MP front and rear cameras respectively, Octa-core 1.4GHz, 5.2-inch display, 3GB RAM, and 2,900mAh battery capacity.

You like?

3. Google has introduced fact check to curb fake news

This has taken too long especially since people largely depend on Google for news. A blog post by Google suggests that the company will include a fact check label in Google news.

This label will highlight news and information that has been vetted and proven to be true or false.

This is timely and I hope this feature will be effective soon so avoid the spread of misinformation and fake news especially as we near the August General Elections.

4. Infinix S2 Pro in Kenya soon

This is the first the first Wefie handset. In the Infinix world, Wefie is the plural for Selfie. Got it now?

Infinix S2 Pro is set to be launched on April 10th in Kenya. If you are an Infinix fan, you must recall that Infinix launched the HOT series last year, S2 Pro is still a member of this series but the “Hot” branding has been dropped.

The S2 Pro comes with a 5.2-inch curved display, 3GB RAM, 13MP +8MP front cameras with LED Flash and 13MP back camera with Dual LED, Android 6.0 Marshmallow, 3000mAh battery capacity, and 1.3GHz Octa-core processor.

The good news keeps coming, seems like NTSA announcement on the issuance of a driving license to any driver is not the only impactful development specific to Kenya.

5. Twitter to launch Lite

Twitter Inc. is launching Lite, a faster version of its mobile service. This service is expected to improve the experience of people in emerging markets or those that have little data on their smartphones. This service mostly targets users outside the US.

Twitter is not the first to launch a product in this category since Facebook Lite was launched in 2015.

This service mostly targets users outside the US.

6. Pegasus for Android

This is a newly discovered mobile spyware that masquerades as a normal app. How bad is it you ask? It secretly gains root access and the result is that you will be spied on. Last year, a similar malicious product was discovered in iOS.Be warned!

Be warned!

7. Facebook tools to fight the spread of revenge porn

Facebook has launched new tools to prevent the sharing of revenge porn on its platforms. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this in a post that read, in part:

“…Today we’re rolling out new tools to prevent “revenge porn” from being shared on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram…”

8. Kenya’s Computer and Cybercrimes Bill 2016 gets approved

The Computer and Cybercrime Bill 2016 has, at last, been approved. This is good news considering the rising cases of cyber crimes in Kenya. This bill is expected to monitor, control, and eliminate cybercrimes.

This bill is expected to monitor, control, and eliminate cybercrimes. These crimes include computer fraud, cyber-stalking, and child pornography. The legislation proposes tough and strict penalties for those found guilty.

9. Apple music for Android revamped

And the makeover is for the better. The app is now as good as the iOS version released last year. The aim was to bring greater value and simplicity and it has delivered since the updates have translated into a more organized and appealing interface.

In addition to these, the Now Playing tab allows users to read lyrics for songs they are listening to.

10. LG receives 20 Red Dot Awards

Finally, it was a great week for LG as the giant Chinese manufacturer scooped a record 20 awards during this year’s Red Dot Awards. The annual event awards products for their exemplary design.

Congratulations are in order to LG for emerging a big winner!

If you are a driver, be sure to get your digital driving license once the issuance process starts. We can only hope that NTSA will not push the date forward since these talked have been held since 2016. Once you are issued with your the upgraded driving license, life will be a lot easier.

Have a lovely weekend.

Oppo A57, the ‘Unstoppable Selfie’ smartphone, to launch in Kenya

OPPO A57 is set to arrive in Kenya this April. Well, April is here and so is A57.

The handset was officially announced in November 2016 in China but is yet to arrive in the country.

The handset is camera-focused. This is definitely strategic since a majority of smartphone users have embraced the selfie trend.

OPPO has been using the ‘Unstoppable Selfie’ tagline to market this handset since it was launched.

The company is known to use catchy taglines as was the case with F1 which was dubbed the ‘Selfie Expert’.

OPPO first entered into the Kenyan smartphone market in 2016.

One of its best handsets has to be the Oppo F1 which can rightfully boast trendsetter rights among other OPPO handsets.

The handset came with innovative camera technology that helped capture beautiful images.

Back to A57, the handset continues the selfie tradition as it comes with an impressive 16MP front-facing camera and OPPO says it takes gorgeous selfies effortlessly.

Wondering why OPPO would choose to use ‘Unstoppable Selfie’ as a tagline? Time to find out:

The front facing camera comes with a Beautify 4.0 mode that is designed to help you capture gorgeous shots with natural-looking color tones.

This feature promises decent shots even in low light conditions. This is definitely subject to confirmation since most mid-range handsets are yet to deliver on this promise.

The camera also comes with the bokeh effect that promises to give your selfies an effortless distinction.

The giant Chinese manufacturer decided to dress A57 with a uni-body design. The result is a beautifully crafted handset.

No compromise was made on the design. The handset features curved edges and a sleek finish. The home button doubles as a fingerprint sensor.

The 3GB RAM is okay. This means smooth performance and multitasking. You can run several applications simultaneously.

We can only hope that switching from the various applications is as smooth.

OPPO has, however, cut some corners. The 2,900mAh battery capacity is a bit disappointing.

OPPO F1 was powered by 2,500mAh non-removable battery; hence, expectations were a bit high for its next handset.

A 3,500mAh battery capacity would have been much welcome. We can also hope that the price will fall below the indicated range.

It would be imprudent to comment on the performance without using the handset but a 1.4GHz Octa-core processor is not very bad.

It does look like the company did not compromise on performance and style and this is definitely plus.

Looking at all specs, OPPO A57 is a handset that has been exclusively designed for selfie lovers.

The camera is, perhaps, its top selling point.

the other features are average but since this a midrange handset, it makes sense that it comes with the mentioned specifications.
