Jumia Mobile Week 2017 is here, Save the date

This year’s edition of Jumia Mobile Week is around the corner. It kicks off on the 24th to 30th April. Jumia promises that this will be an entire week of great smartphone deals.

It is, perhaps, the biggest mobile sale in Kenya that promises exciting mobile deals on various smartphones in the market. This event brings together Jumia and various smartphone brands.

This is definitely an exciting opportunity for all mobile enthusiasts as they can grab their dream handsets at a reduced price. It’s like the Black Friday of smartphones.

This comes barely two months after Jumia launched a platform to promote local products. These can be seen as efforts to increase popularity and gain dominance in a growing market.

Jumia Mobile Week was first held in 2015 which means that the 2017 edition is the third ever mobile sales event by Jumia in Kenya.

Is the Jumia Mobile Week all about smartphones?

Well, mostly but not entirely. You can also get deals on selected electronics and accessories. Good examples are tablets and mobile accessories.

Jumia Mobile Week Key deals

The 2017 Jumia Mobile Week will feature great deals according to Ms. Sanaz Abaie of Jumia Kenya. Abaie stated that the third edition of the mobile week will kick off on Monday and that customers can expect to get their desired items at crazy deals.

She added that customers should have their Jumia accounts set up so that they do not miss out on the amazing deals on the table.

This year, the company has partnered with Infinix, Huawei, Oppo, Tecno, and Injoo, Apple, and other brands to bring to you amazing deals. Jumia says that the objective is to ensure that customers get the best offers for phones and tablets.

Abaie added that the discounts range from 50% up to 95%. Power banks will go for as little as Ksh. 100 while tablets will be 20%-30% off.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Infinix has announced up to 40% discount on some of its smartphones such as Infinix Note 3, Infinix Hot 4 Lite, and Infinix Zero 4 Plus.

Abaie said that the company is promising delivery within 24 hours if you are within Nairobi.

It gets way better.

Jumia will also be giving gift vouchers and coupons during the Jumia mobile week. She confirmed that the e-commerce website will be giving 2,500 worth of vouchers for anything bought from sister companies such as Jumia Food.

We can confirm that Jumia promises Ksh. 1,500 cashback vouchers on any handset costing Ksh. 5,000 and above.

These vouchers can be redeemed on any product on the Jumia website within the validity period.

The 2017 Jumia Mobile week has already gained some traction and there is much buzz around it. On Friday, Larry Madowo talked about the mobile sales event and even gave away some goodies.

Deals go live at 0000 hours on Monday 24th and since everyone else is looking forward to getting their dream smartphones at discount prices, it’s wise to take advantage of early access.

Download the Jumia App to get early access at 11.30PM. There will be exclusive deals and early log in gives you exclusive access before everyone else.

Apply hours are from 9.15am-10.15am and 01.15pm-02.15pm every day on the app. This allows for mobile app users to get the best deals.

The countdown has already started. Buckle up, and prepare to enjoy the best deals. It is, perhaps, the only time that you can acquire your dream smartphone without breaking your bank in 2017.

Tunukiwa Daily Offers: Is Safaricom finally on the right track with this one?

Safaricom is back, this time the giant telco has introduced Tunukiwa bundles, a plan targeting the common hustler.

This comes shortly after Airtel introduced a mobile subscription for cheap calls dubbed “Tubonge Bundles”.

Telkom Kenya announced “Amkia Mbundle” which offers subscribers free 50MB data bundle valid from 6 am to 8 am daily.

The Telkom Kenya (Orange) data offering is free. You can access it by dialing *50#. You can opt out by dialing *50#.

This just goes to show that the quest to woo subscribers among the various Kenyan telcos is far from over.

If you have been watching TV, you must have seen an ad on “Tunukiwa Daily Bundles” but Safaricom does not succeed in relaying the message well.

It is not immediately clear exactly what is being advertised. That’s strange coming from Safaricom since the company has always had effective ads.

What’s good with Tunukiwa?

Well, several things stand out.

First, the bundles are affordable even to the common man. Safaricom did get it right this time round. With Flex, the giant telcos had completely missed the mark.

That was until it introduced the Ksh. 50 daily plan. That makes sense to a good number of Kenyans. To some extent.

Tunukiwa and Flex are in two different categories but, in the end, reasonable pricing wins. It would be interesting to get subscription data for Flex to date.

To subscribe to Tunukiwa, you should dial *444# and then choose your desired plan. An important thing to note is that the plan will be customized for you.

This means that offers will be unique to all Safaricom users. Based on what? Your loyalty.

The plan offers calls, SMS, and data all valid 24 hours. Below is a screenshot of the screen you are taken to after dialing *444#:

Safaricom Tunukiwa plan for calls, SMS, and Data

Tunukiwa a hit or a miss?

A hit, to a large extent.

The plans are quite affordable. It gives existing Safaricom subscribers a reason to stay connected at a cheap price.

Safaricom has not explicitly specified the target market for the plan but from the look of things, it was looking to attract the “common mwananchi”.

However, the best deals are on SMSs; hence, it is prudent to assume that those who love to text will be drawn to this offer more.

Safaricom can now talk about customer satisfaction since they have finally introduced a reasonable plan for the common man. It seems that the giant telcos has been listening to customer complaints and the feedback is welcome.

Should you try Tunukiwa Daily Offers? Absolutely. Safaricom accommodates you with as low as Ksh. 6.

In the meantime, we can only expect price wars between the various telcos to escalate as has been evidenced in the past couple of months. The only thing we can say is: May the best telco win!

MasterCard reveals fingerprint sensor for its credit cards

MasterCard is adding a fingerprint sensor to its payment cards as an effort to fight fraud.

This will make PIN numbers and signatures obsolete.

When the swipe to pay system was introduced, we were all wowed! It was an invention that not many of us saw coming. We welcomed the new innovation and since then, our lives have changed for the better.

Before long, fraud happened and some were left cursing and wishing someone would come to save us. Turns out that MasterCard got the memo. The latest innovation of adding a fingerprint sensor hopes to fight in-store fraud.

The card is currently under trial in South Africa. The company says that more trials will be conducted over the next couple of months with a full roll-out expected later this year.

It gets better:

The technology only requires users to place their fingers over the sensor when making payments. Nothing confusing here.

The giant credit card provider has confirmed that not all store owners will be forced to buy a new hardware as the new innovation does not affect the compatibility with all of them. It may not be compatible with older magnetic stripe-only terminals.

MasterCard chief of safety and security Ajay Bhalla said that the fingerprint sensor technology will help to deliver additional security and convenience. He added that the technology cannot be easily replicated or stolen.

So, how safe is safe?

Bhalla was quoted saying that the fingerprint technology is “not something that can be taken or replicated”

That’s not true.

Thieves can definitely exploit this flaw although the possibility is often downplayed by most companies. Not that we would expect them to admit the level of vulnerability.

The idea is to reduce fraud not to completely stop it. No one, even MasterCard, should front the idea as the end of in-store card-based theft.

Fingerprint sensors have been compromised in the past. In 2014, it was reported that a fingerprint sensor of Samsung Galaxy S5 handset had been hacked barely a week after its’ launch. Also, that of iPhone 5s was compromised days after it was released into the market.

The company is yet to come out and talk about the company’s plans to prevent online fraud: if that plan is on their to-do list.

So, is Kenya on the list of target markets?

No word yet on if and when the card with the fingerprint embedded on them will be rolled out into the Kenyan market. We hope so because this will eliminate queer habits displayed by Kenyans when inputting their PINS: especially that suspicious look that elder women give when and after inputting their pin. It takes some level of restraint because I’m pretty sure most of us have been on the verge of being rude.

MasterCard Rewarding Kenyans

Since last year, MasterCard has been rewarding lucky Kenyans who use the company’s payment cards to pay for goods. This is seen as an effort to popularize the payment solution and to also encourage more Kenyans to adopt it.

Local celebrities such as Avril, Sauti Sol, Eric Omondi, and Churchill have been rewarding lucky shoppers in various supermarkets.

Samsung Galaxy S8 is a winner but it comes with one annoying design flaw

Samsung Galaxy S8 is of one of the most beautiful handsets ever created.

It’s a winner when it comes to its performance, battery life, wireless charging technology, and the IP68 water resistance technology.

That’s not all: the design will leave most of us with permanent heart eyes.

Its carefully designed curved screen earns it’s a position as the best-looking handset so far.

In short, the handset does not need a shout out to be noticed. It is one of the finest handsets in 2017.

But there is a problem:

Samsung has erred by placing the fingerprint sensor next to the rear camera.

The awkward placement of the fingerprint sensor could leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.

Samsung missed a mark in an effort to make room for a larger display.

The fingerprint sensor had to find a new home. And the decision was made.

What’s with all the fuss?

To cut the long rant short, the fingerprint sensor was placed just next to the 12MP camera.

One of the most annoying things about this is that the camera lens will get smudged by your finger each time you miss to touch the sensor instead.

The fact is that you will miss severally. And this can mean blurry photos. No one wants that.

Also, reaching the scanner will not be easy for everyone. This will especially be annoying for people with dwarf fingers.

This seems like an overreaction especially given an earlier admission that this is Samsung’s best creation so far. It is not.

When it comes to smartphones, the overall user experience matters a lot. Also, it could have been understandable if this flaw was in one of Samsung’s midrange handsets such as A3 or A5.

Samsung Galaxy S8 is a premium handset that has a high price tag; hence, Samsung did not have to compromise on a small detail that changes a lot.

Also, this is 2017 and if smartphone manufacturers want to create an impression, they have to get things right. All details have to be great at every touch point.

Every single one of them.

Galaxy S8 is a chance for Samsung to get in customers’ good graces and an opportunity to retain its position as a top Android brand.

Samsung scored a 95% and since it is a human creation, something had to be off. Albeit small.

There’s always something that makes us think ‘what if’ and that’s allowed.

Didn’t Samsung foresee this?

Probably not. If the Seoul-based manufacturer did, it could not foresee the expected reaction. It could have been a compromise that the company was willing to live with.

However, the company could also have assumed that the presence of other sensors such as the facial and iris recognition sensors would make us overlook the awkwardly placed sensor.

The problem is that these two do not support services such as Samsung Pay which only uses the fingerprint sensor to authenticate credit card transactions.

Hopefully, Samsung will not repeat this mistake with subsequent handsets.

We can only hope that Samsung has heard our grievances.

In the future, they can embed the fingerprint sensor in the display. That we will take.

To be able to attract clients who are looking for a social media manager, here are skills you should be equipped with;

1. Social Media Analytics Manager

As an analytics manager, your job is to study and give feedback on how the accounts are doing.

You are in charge of monitoring user feedback, and give reports on whether the employed strategies are working.

2. Social Media Strategist

As a strategist, your job is to come up with short and long-term solutions to improving user feedback.

This, of course, is done after going through the reports prepared by the analytics manager.
Digital/Social Media Producer

A social media producer is in charge of ensuring all activities on all sites are up and running.

In this capacity, you are also in charge of monitoring and producing content.

3. Social Media Content Developer

You are tasked with the job of drafting articles and phrases that will be used across the social media platforms.

This role also requires you to ensure texts, videos and photos are produced in time and scheduled for dissemination to the consumers.

You are also in charge of responding to user feedback.

4. Social Media Campaign Manager

A campaign manager is tasked with carrying out a successful social media campaign.

After the campaign’s timeline is set, you are expected to get together a team that will be in charge of different roles, do a survey of social media trends, target markets, produce content, and lastly draw up a report on achievements and challenges, and of course solutions to the challenges.

5. Account Executives

A social media executive bears roles played by the analytics manager, strategist, and content producer.

This is an umbrella title, under which you are tasked with roles to ensuring the social media pages are up and running, set goals met, feedback monitored, reports done and recommendations done, etc.

With this role, you are the manager, the analyst, the producer; the person in charge.

The Internet has changed how business is done, and many more companies are looking for social media managers.

Skills in the above categories will definitely land you a job in Kenya today, and even better, help you stand out in job applications in any profession.

Topic Ideas for Starting a Blog in Kenya

If you are thinking of starting a blog, and are confused about what exactly to blog about, then this article is for you.

The blogging field is currently overcrowded, as everyone with a laptop, phone, and access to the internet is branding themselves a ‘blogger’.

To stand out over and above this crowd, you need to settle on a particular field your blog will focus on, and stay consistent with content over time.

Here are some awesome blog ideas:

1. Personal Diary

These are blogs dedicated to documenting the owner’s own experiences, thoughts, feelings, and stories. Many blogs I have subscribed to fall under this category.

On these blogs, the owner posts opinion articles, their own life stories, their poetry, a few pieces by friends, etc. They are personal blogs.

2. Lifestyle

Lifestyle blogs cover day to day life stories; from relationships to food, to travel. If you have seen a fun blog that covers interesting topics like the aforementioned, then it falls under the lifestyle category.

Lifestyle blogs are fun to run, as the content is always available. What is important is to decide exactly which specter of lifestyle you’d like your blog to cover.

For example, a blog about your travels could also cover the different foods you indulge in on your trips, but would not really comfortably accommodate gossip around town.

An example of a lifestyle blog is lovinemboya.com

3. Sports

Sports blogs cover sports news. It could be regional or geared to cover a wider audience.

I have tried running a sports blog before, and I would advise that you have contacts of many people as possible in the sports world, as these always come in handy in getting content for your blog.

4. Technology

Technology blogs are an interesting sphere. The content never seems to end.

I have not personally run a technology blog yet, but a friend who forks out a minimum of four fresh pieces on technology by 6 am in the morning.

Technology blogs are fun, especially doing the device reviews (which I have done). However, these blogs need a lot of work and dedication. If you are the kind who rites once or twice a week, I would rather you start a blog on a different topic.

An example of a technology blog is trending.co.ke

5. Politics

Do you have great passion and interest in discussing the political scene in the country? Then start a blog for that!

The advantage with political blogs is the content just never runs out, the political drama, especially in Kenya, never ends.

However, with this type of blog, be prepared to rub a few people (or many) the wrong way. Have a prepared defense strategy.

6. Business

Do you want to cover business stories? Then start a business blog. Here, the ideas are endless.

You could do features on SMEs, profile business owners, young startups, job adverts, and of course current news in the business world.

From experience, these blogs attract advertisers fastest.

In summary, whatever topic you decide to base your blog on, it is more important that you choose a topic you are genuinely interested in.

Passion will keep you going when nothing else does. Trust me.

Ajira Digital Kenya Portal: Is this the Future of Online Jobs in Kenya?

“The Ajira Digital Programme can help you determine if online work is for you…” This is one of the statements that greet you when you visit the Ajira website.

Launched in 2016, the Ajira Digital platform became the first multi-sectorial initiative by the Kenyan government that aims to introduce youths to the concept of online work.

This platform provides young people with tools, training, and mentorship needed to make a living in the online environment.

This program is spearheaded by the Ministry of ICT.

The goal is to help over one million Kenyans to access online jobs within a one year period. However, some pessimists have described this figure as unrealistic.

Reason?

The online environment is deluged with workers and most companies are cutting down on labor. This group argues that this is expected to continue.

Then and Now

The high unemployment rates among youths are among key factors that advised the creation of the Ajira digital portal.

An article published in the Business Daily in 2016 suggested that Kenya has the largest number of unemployed youths in East Africa.

The Daily quoted a World Bank report that showed that one in five Kenyan youths in the working age bracket is unemployed.

That is where online work comes in.

Online work has come a long way. Jobs that used to pay between $1 and $2 are now paying an average of $5.

Also, more people are making a living in the online environment in 2017 compared to five years ago.

Ten years ago, very little information was available on online jobs. Today, there are numerous online platforms that allow people to share information or even advertise online jobs.

In addition, there are numerous categories of online work that young people can engage in.

You can become a graphic designer, virtual assistant, transcriber, web designers, and much more.

Earlier, the emphasis was mostly placed on writers. As well, Ajira digital jobs span across various industries.

The bulk of online work is created by companies based in large economies of the world. Thousands of Kenyans work online.

Ajira digital Kenya makes the process easier since it gives Kenyan youth access to online work.

Pros of the Ajira Digital Programme

  • Increased awareness of online jobs in Kenya
  • Free training and mentorship to those who would not otherwise afford
  • Provision of tools such as computer which are not accessible to some young people
  • Promote Kenya as a destination for online work

The platform does not offer jobs but provides links to a few existing legitimate sites. There is no assurance of jobs and the sites you are directed to may or may not offer work.

It creates awareness and avail training and mentoring tools. There are other great benefits since you also network with a community of online workers in Kenya.

Internet Costs and Reach Problems

The high cost of the internet may act as a hindrance.

The Ajira Kenya government initiative is a good idea but some things remain to be done for desirable results to be achieved.

If internet costs are lowered, jobless youths would comfortably enjoy the benefits of the platform.

The Studio Mashinani  Controversy

Studio Mashinani is another initiative that seeks to leverage on creativity and talent in the music and acting industry. It is listed on the Ajira Kenya website.

This is an initiative of the Ministry of ICT and the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

Controversy rocked this project early this year when Bien-Aime Baraza, a member of Sauti Sol band accused the government of stealing his idea.

Bien stated that the idea had been presented to President Uhuru Kenyatta who referred the afro-pop group to the Youth Fund management.

He claims that he was shocked that the idea had been implemented without even involving the brains behind the idea namely Sauti Sol.
