matStudents of Nyamache Boys High School have come out to reveal why they burnt down their dormitory just hours after Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i left.

The secondary school in Kisii burnt down a dormitory and academic block last month, just hours after Matiang’i graced their prize giving ceremony.

It is now emerging that a broken promise was the main grievance.

Apparently, the principal Philip Ogechi broke a promise he made in the presence of the CS to prepare the students’ ‘good food’.
A form four student who spoke on condition of anonymity due to fear of victimization said they were served with the ordinary ‘bad food’ for supper despite the promise.

“Everyone was irritated. They kept discussing that matter. When the administration was told, it didn’t take it seriously. So, after eating what was there, we went for entertainment. A short while later, we were shocked to realise that a fire had started ,” the student told Nation.

The principal had pledged a special supper, and if he had honored the promise, things would probably have been different.

“If the administration gets a certain demand from students, they should not take it lightly. They should call the students to ask them why they want something the way they want it,” another student added.

Poor diet and harsh rules are some of the main grievances giving by rioting students.
