Groove Awards 2017 Nominees & Winners List

The Groove Awards is a Kenyan annual Gospel award. The winners are chosen by the public. In 2013 there were 29 different categories, including gospel performers, DJs, radio and TV shows, and producers. The award’s coverage has spread to include other East African countries, including Rwanda. It is sponsored by Safaricom and MoSound Events.

The first Groove Awards were presented in 2004, at a small gathering. It has since grown to be a live-broadcast event courtesy of media sponsors. To date, more than 1,200 artists/groups have been nominated and 270 Groove statuettes presented to exemplary Gospel musicians in Kenya and the larger East African region. The 8th awards ceremony, held on 1 June 2013, was attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The Groove Awards 2014 was presented on 1 June 2014, at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi, Kenya under the theme, ‘Let Your Light Shine'(LYLS), derived from Matthew 5:16.

Six Tricks To Growing Your Social Media Presence in Kenya

Social media has taken over; companies and individuals now scrambling to establish themselves as the go-to brands above the huge crowd.

This can be quite overwhelming and could drive you crazy.

What with so many of us on the Internet!

But, social media shouldn’t be a headache, as there are ways you can easily grow your social media presence.

Here are Six Tricks To Growing Your Social Media Presence:

1. Understand how each platform works
This also means know who your target market is, and which sites they frequently use.

Millennials love Facebook, serious business connections are mostly on LinkedIn, and a mixture of everyone on Twitter.

Understand your brand and what your message is, then choose the best platform.

2. Post Regularly
Attract your audience could be easy, but to keep them hooked, you need to hook yourself first.

Think of it this way, you like a store because they stock your favorite snacks. Suddenly they stock the snacks only on Fridays.

Then suddenly, they don’t stock for a long while. Then they are back, then they are not.

You will get tired of this Tom and Jerry game and simply switch to getting your favorite snacks from another store.

The same will happen with your audience. They will leave you if you are not loyal.

3. Engage Your Audience
Respond to messages on time, and reply to comments left on your posts.

This will show people you are not a robot, but a human being behind that screen who can actually see, read, understand and reply to what they are saying.

Show them you care by engaging them.

4. Have A Website
A website provides a platform to pool together everything you are involved in.

Not only this but provides credibility to the services/products you claim to offer as a brand.

Get a professionally designed website. This will put you over and above your competitors.

5. Stick To Your Purpose
Many times I have been invited to like a Facebook page, only to later see a notification that the particular page changed their name to a totally different product/service.

The new business is not what your audience initially subscribed to.

This gives the impression of you not being trustable, grounded and reliable person.

6. Do More Everyday
Monitor your social media response and discern what works and what doesn’t.

Create new strategies, set new goals. Engage people more, sometimes even put out trivia questions for them.

Use different types of media, from texts to images to videos.

Get better and more creative every day.

Most important, stay genuine and true to your cause.

People are attracted by amazing posts but will stay because you stayed at it.

The buck at the end of the day falls on you.

This week in tech: Safaricom suffers a technical hitch giving rise to conspiracy theorists and more weekly tech news

This was one of those weeks. Tech news and politics happened concurrently making it hard to pinpoint what was really going on. But we will try. We always do.

Safaricom experiences a serious technical hitch, Wakahare carries the day, we got to meet the “Tibim” hitmaker, MCA woman aspirant blames the defeat on a photo she took with Uhuruto, and a former watchman is nominated to contest for the MCA position in Kericho County. This was a lot of tea for one week.

Yet, there’s more since the tech news kept streaming in.

Below is a summary of this week’s tech news:

1. Safaricom experiences a serious technical hitch

The telcos suffered a major technical hitch on Monday making it impossible for people to make calls, SMS, and use data. Suddenly, this gave rise to conspiracy theorists with most choosing to use humor to explain the hitch. Here are a few examples:

@SenMutula: Safaricom network has gone on safari from 8 am!

@greatrnk: I see Safaricom is also doing its primaries (and rehearsals) in readiness for the upcoming General Elections.

Others went ahead to analyze the situation further:

@MisterAlbie: If you shut down Kenya Power and Safaricom at the same time you have this country under lockdown.

Good things came with this hitch since Safaricom customers were allowed to send money for free for 24 hours.

2. Uber partners with old mutual to offer training to driver-partners.

Uber has partnered with Old Mutual in a bid to extend its free money management course to its Kenyan driver-partners.

The idea was first implemented in South Africa but has so far been extended to Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria.

3. Jumia Mobile Week kicks off

When it comes to bargains, Kenyans come out in large numbers to enjoy discounts that were as much as 50% off. But who doesn’t anyway!

The Mobile Jumia Week kicked off and customers were treated to massive discounts on smartphones and other accessories.

The sales event is still ongoing and is set to end on 30th, April.

This is a major sales event that qualifies to enter the tech news roundup especially since e-shopping is gradually taking shape in Kenya.

4. CBK announces licensing of Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB)

The Central Bank of Kenya has licensed the Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) after the institution met stipulated requirements.

DIB is the first UAE-based bank unit to be established in Kenya.

5. Rumors of the possibility that Samsung will refurbish and sell Note 7 resurface Again!

These rumors never seem to die, do they?

A refurbished version of Galaxy Note 7 is reportedly coming back in June to Korea.

Samsung has REPORTEDLY said that it is considering selling refurbished Galax Note 7 devices in select markets.

It is ALLEGED that a Samsung spokesperson has said that the availability will be determined by market demands and content from relevant regulatory authorities.

It would be kind of Samsung to make an official statement, like take to the podium and either refute or confirm such tech news. We will wait.

6. Uber swallows the humble pie, allows old and small cars to join fleet

From price wars to strikes, Uber woes in Kenya have been major.

When Uber first entered the Kenyan market, it had set high standards when it came to the type of cars that could join its fleet but those standards have been relaxed.

The company is now welcoming small and old cars they had earlier rejected. The company is even encouraging their driver partners to sign up their 1000cc Toyota Vitz. Interesting.

7. Facebook violent videos continue to attract outrage

This is worrying and serious and tragic.

Did you hear of that man who strangled his baby and himself on Facebook Live or the self-proclaimed serial killer who shot an innocent old man on Facebook Live?

Pressure is mounting on Facebook to gain control of the situation. This means that Facebook has a lot of work to do.

Can Facebook solve the increasingly violent video problem? Even Zuckerberg can’t guarantee that but we are pretty sure his team is working on a mitigating measure. Hopefully.

8. Infinix S2 pro to get the Android 7 Nougat update

Finally!

The handset came with Marshmallow out of the box but the update to Nougat is timely. The update is already being rolled out to users.

So, if the marshmallow was holding you back from acquiring S2 Pro, things have been taken care of. Go thee and grab your unit today!

9. Chrome for Android gets a minor update

The keyword is ‘minor’ but the important thing is that it is for the better.

The latest update allows you to view and manage downloads-in-progress from the downloads page. You will also be able to delete browsing history since the update comes with a redesigned history page.

Google has been testing Chrome 58 and it is finally ready to roll it out to users. The update does not come with mind-blowing features since the main aim is to fix some stability issues evidenced in the previous version. Buy hey, it’s better than a downgrade.

10. Telkom Kenya lays down plans to conquer the local connectivity market

Telkom Kenya was once ‘Tibim’ but it was soon overtaken by other service providers. In its attempts to regain its power, the company has laid out a solid plan to reclaim the Kenyan connectivity Market.

We can only hope that the goals are solid enough especially given the competitive forces in the market.

That’s it for tech news this week. Cheers!

CBK announces licensing of Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB)

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced licensing of Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) after the bank met stipulated requirements to operate in Kenya.

DIB is a unit  of United Arab Emirates-based Dubai Islamic Banks.

This makes DIB the third shariah-compliant to be licensed in Kenya after Gulf African Bank Limited and First Community bank in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

The licensing, however, comes at a time when the regulator is yet to lift the moratorium it had implemented with regard to licensing of new banks.

CBK has, however, hinted that the licensing could be the first step to lifting the moratorium on licensing of new commercial banks. This we will have to wait and see.

According to CBK, the entry of DIB in the country will expand the offering in the Shariah-compliant banking niche and the general financial market.

DIB is the first UAE-based bank unit to be established in Kenya and this is seen as an important factor. One that is likely to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

That’s not all:

Kenya is DIB’s first and preferred entry point into the Sub-Saharan Africa and this may indicate Kenya’s stature as an excellent financial hub.

About Dubai Islamic Bank

Dubai Islamic Bank is a subsidiary of the Dubai Islamic Bank PJSC (DIB PJSC) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) founded in 1975. It has been ranked one of the largest Islamic Banks in the UAE.

As at 2016, DIB PJSC had an asset base of $47.6 billion and a capital of $7.4 billion.

The financial institution has a presence in Bosnia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sudan, Turkey, and the UAE. Its entry into the Kenyan market is in line with its strategic focus to enhance its international focus.

What’s the general state of the local banking sector?

The decision to license Dubai Islamic Bank could be seen as CBK’s confidence in the stability of the local banking sector even though it has gone through some turbulent times in the past few years.

Banks have not been doing very well especially after the interest rates were readjusted. The capping of interest rates has affected both lenders and customers.

Bankers, IMF and a section of analyst have, however, warned that the interest capping will have a huge blow to the economy and that it is a disaster waiting to happen.

A report released by Sterling Capital Ltd suggested that while capping interest rates is a good gesture, it may end up hurting low-income earners. Banks have also complained that the measure would lock out thousands of borrowers.

Local banks have also undergone restructuring and this has led to massive job losses. Technology has taken over the banking sector and this has made some positions virtually redundant.

That’s a sad state of affairs but that’s not to say that Dubai Islamic Bank will not do well in the Kenyan market. There is a lot of room for growth in the financial sector and the newbie must have spotted a gap in the market.

We wish Dubai Islamic Bank the very best even as it seeks to establish its presence in the country.

Uber partners with Old Mutual to offer driver-partners financial management skills

Uber partner drivers are set to benefit from a training organized by UAP Old Mutual.

The financial services group is planning to equip Uber drivers with basic financial management skills through this training.

The transport company has partnered with Old Mutual in a bid to extend its free money management course to its Kenyan driver-partners.

The idea was first implemented in South Africa but has so far been extended to Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Old Mutual offers long-term savings, protection, investment, and lending solutions.

The financial services company was founded in 1845 and operates in 18 countries across Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

The course is part of the Global Money Week and its theme is Learn, Save, and Earn. The Global Money Week highlights the importance of money management skills.

What’s in it for Uber Drivers?

The drivers will be expected to attend the “On the Money” workshops at scheduled times.

Driver partners will be equipped with financial management skills to grow their income and save for the future.

They will also learn how to build sustainable businesses.

This will translate into healthy saving habits, basic money principles, and general financial well-being.

The course will also enable driver-partners to understand financial needs and this will then lead to financial wellness.

They will be able to make financial decisions from a point of knowledge.

The Head of Financial Education at Old Mutual John Manyike was quoted saying that the financial institution was excited to be part of this partnership.

He added that they were committed to helping driver partners make the most of their hard-earned money.

Manyike further said that small businesses are important to an inclusive economic growth in Africa and that this growth and success benefits all.

In addition, he noted that the partnership with Uber enables the company to promote financial management skills across Africa.

The partnership with Old Mutual was also welcomed by Uber Sub-Saharan Africa General Manager Alon Lits who said that the training would empower driver partners to raise capital for future investments.

Lits went on to add that the partnership will foster skills that Uber driver partners need to grow their small businesses and at the same time support their families financially.

He further expressed Uber’s commitment to the growth of both the transport sector and in the development of entrepreneurs.

Uber seems committed to empowering its driver partners and this can be proved by the kind of partnerships it has formed.

One good example is the partnership with Sidian Bank to launch a vehicles solutions programme that gives driver-partners easy access to quality vehicles for their Uber-based transport services.

Drivers who wish to be part of the training can apply online.

Statistics on SMEs

A recent study by Invest In Africa (IIA) and Strathmore Business showed that more than 70% of SME’s in Kenya fail within the first three years of operation due to failure to grow.

The findings further attributed this failure to lack of planning. It was found that 30% of these businesses do not have a proper plan of running the business.

SMEs are an important part of the economy as the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) notes that they provide employment to half of the Kenyan workforce.

What’s Your Body Type? Here’s How To Determine

Have you ever bought an outfit that you saw a friend looking so good in, but to your disappointment the dress did not look as good on you?

It could be that you are of a different body type from your friend, and a different design of the same dress would look good on you.

Here, we will classify body types in four categories.

We have the pear, the apple, the hourglass and the rectangle.

There are women who do not fit exactly into a particular body type, but these four shapes provide an almost accurate estimate of where you fall.

The Pear
A woman with this body type has wider hips than the shoulders and waistline.

This body type goes well will all types of clothes. A fitting dress, a peplum dress, fitting jeans, etc. Whatever a person with this body type wears ends up looking good on them.

However, this person could do better if they avoid free fitting trousers and skirts as they make the hips look larger, in turn making the upper torso looking smaller and the body imbalanced.

We would recommend loose fitting tops, and tight fitting trousers, skirts.

The Apple
Women with this body type have the shoulders, waist, and hips at about the same size.

More often, the shoulders are wider than the hip line, with the waistline wider than the shoulders.

Dressing this body type requires very careful selection of clothes because unfortunately many clothes are designed for the pear and other body types.

For dresses and blouses, go for belted ones. Dresses and blouses/shirts that have a predefined waistline give the body a defined feminine shape.

The Hourglass
This is the most envied body type because just like the pear, anything works for them.

Just like an hourglass, she has balanced proportions of the hips, to the bust to the shoulders.

Unlike the pear, however, the hourglass woman does not have to avoid any loose fitting bottoms. She can wear anything and pull it off.

Most clothes advertisers use this woman’s body type, and that is why women with other body types find the clothes looking differently on them.

The Rectangle
This woman has the shoulders, waistline, the hip line at exactly the same size. They are usually very slender, lean and athletic.

A woman with this body type can pull off most clothes, BUT, no loose fitting clothes. Why? They overdress the body. In Kiswahili, we say, ‘Nguo imekuvaa’. You wouldn’t want that.

Which body type do you now think you are?

Well, you don’t have to think about it, take a tape measure, and find out the size of your shoulders, in comparison to your hips, waist and bust size.

With these results, you can now safely conclude your body size.

How To Create A Successful Self Help Group in Kenya

One of my New Year resolutions was starting a self-help group (chama) with a few friends.

I was hopeful and eager to experience an economic breakthrough as I’ve seen happen for members of chamas.

So, I quickly sent out the word to friends I thought would be interested, and we immediately created a WhatsApp group to discuss the way forward.

Long story short, this is all we ever did.

At that time I did not understand why our group never went further than an inactive WhatsApp group, until recently when I sat down with members of Kaimuru Self Help Group, a team of youths making huge economic strides because of the chama they formed.

These men, after explaining to them what happened to our group, shared the following tips:

Have a set economic standard requirement for every member.

Every interested person must have a source of income that guarantees they will be able (or at least try) to pay the monthly contributions.

David Irungu, chairman of Kaimuru Self Help Group explained that the moment you allow people who do not have the economic power to consistently and continually make the required contributions, the chama will fail.

A chama is first the contributions, before the investment.

Every interested person must have a source of income that guarantees they will be able (or at least try) to pay the monthly contributions.

Do a lifestyle audit

Sounds incredible and tasking? Well, would you trust your investments with people you don’t know? It is not enough to just know their name, find out where they come from, where they live, what they do for a living, who their spouse(s) is.

All members of the group should have sufficient information about each other, to avoid any bad surprises.

Also, this is important to enable members to ensure everyone has the same vision and mission so that there are no criminals who might be looking for opportunities to swindle members.

Draft a Constitution

What are your goals as a group? What are the strategies you have set down? Who are the members, and how does one get to become a member? What are the rules of the group? What are the rules governing lending, contribution, meeting attendance, etc.?

A constitution is the group guide. Once this has been drafted and approved, every member gets a copy that they sign and submit.

The signing process ensures that members have agreed to the terms and conditions set down to be part of the group. Even better, they have also agreed to the investment strategies set forth.

For example, at Kaimuri Self Help Group, all members are not just required to sign copies of the agreement, but their spouses MUST sign as well. This ensures inclusion of the family unit in the chama, where in case of anything the spouse can always attest to the signing of the agreement.

Register your group

All Self Help Groups should be formally registered by the county government of Kenya.

After drafting your constitution, you are now a group with a solid direction good enough to be formally recognized and listed by the government.

Legally registering of the chama also gives the body powers to transact business in its name. For example, Kaimuru Self Help Group recently purchased a parcel of land in their name, as a chama.

Mind each others’ business

The group was created to foster economic empowerment among the members, right? Start by supporting each others’ business.

If there are members who run a business complementary to another then they can merge and work together. For example, one member of Kaimuru Self Help Group runs an eatery, and another runs a bodaboda business, the bodaboda guy delivers food supplies to the eatery. Win-Win situation.

Businesses usually intertwine, where there’s a way one can complement the other. This goes back to knowing your chama members very well, so you can determine how you can support each other.

Elect Group officials

The three most important slots for anybody should be filled; this includes the Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer. Why? For accountability and organization.

Roles under these titles should also be defined, written down, and put in a document (preferably the constitution) so that every official understands and agrees to their scope of their work.

David Irungu, Chairman of Kaimuru Self Help Group, had this to say,

‘As chairman, I ensure every strategy we have laid down is met, and the group is well functioning. However, we are a group of friends, with similar goals and desires, and so a lot of teamwork is evident.’

A few extra points to ensuring your Self Help Group is successful include;

Look out for professionals in matters business and finance, and invite them to attend your meetings and offer financial advice to the team.

For example, Kaimuru Self Help Group works closely with officials from Equity Bank and Youth Enterprise Development Fund.

Table-banking! The money collected should not just sit in the account waiting for investment ideas. Let members borrow and pay back with interest. This is how many chamas are growing.

By the end of a year, the money saved will probably have quadrupled, depending on how much interest was set.

Start a welfare saving account, from which members can borrow. This account should be separate from the usual chama account.

The logic here is spreading your investments in different baskets, where, for example, if you decide to purchase land, you don’t have to dip your hands in the same single account members have to borrow from every time. Spread your eggs in different baskets.

Get a regular meeting place, and a set date for meetings. And, set a fine for late coming and absence without apology.

There you go! Looking back, equipped with these tips, I would have been able to create a more functional chama group and started off activities. Now that we know, we can go back to the drawing table and start again.

Tips On How To Keep Your Phone Battery Healthy

The Internet is here! Phones are cheaper, more sleek and fun to have.

But I think we can all agree that the batteries never last!

This could be especially annoying if you have just set yourself and ready to browse the Internet, then the phone suddenly goes off!

The good news is that there are ways you can care for your battery, and get it to last longer.

Here’s are some tips;
1. Store Batteries In A Cool Place
We use our phones all the time, even when walking in the hot sun. Batteries do not like high temperatures.

Do not leave your phone in environments exposed to heat, or use near furnaces.

If you have to remove your battery and store it away for a while, then store it a cool place.

2. It’s Safe To Charge Your Batteries Overnight

It is perfectly fine to leave your phone charging overnight, this is because your phone has the ability to automatically stop taking up more charge once it is fully charged.

The battery just sits there till you unplug it.

3. Charge A Little Whenever You Can
Try to avoid charging your batteries all the way to 100% all the time, then waiting till the charge is 0% to charge again.

The moment your battery hits 20%, you should plug it into a power source, and charge up to about 80% and unplug.

Batteries charged little by little store up more charge than a complete fill, especially if you waited till it’s completely empty.

4. Have Gadgets That Allow For Replaceable Batteries
Buy phones and tablets that have removable and replaceable batteries.

This will allow you to swap batteries when one is empty and replace with one that is fully charged.

This will be especially helpful if you have bad battery habits, you can always just swap and save a single battery the repercussions.

Truth is, your battery will one day die, just like everything else does.

But before then, we could do something to improve the life and our experience with the phones we own.

After all, we live in times when we literally can’t do without our phones.
