Netflix Kenya: Packages, Content & Website

Been Netflixed yet? If no, at least you are aware that Netflix is in Kenya. Yes? Good. Let’s then talk about Netflix Kenya.

Netflix has been in Kenya for over a year now. In 2016, Netflix announced its plan to roll out its services in 130 global markets including Kenya.

This added to the growing number of pay TV services in Kenya.

The company was, perhaps, made more popular by the phrase “Netflix and chill”, a euphemism for “hooking up”, or sex, or a booty call.

This expression was made popular by various social media sites especially Twitter.

Movie lovers have definitely been balling out since Netflix has taken TV content and movies to another level.

Unfortunately, some are still trying to wrap their head around what Netflix is and how it can be accessed. Over a year later!

What’s Netflix?

Netflix is a leading internet media streaming service provider. What this means is that you can stream TV episodes and movies at a standard fee per month.

To start enjoying Netflix in Kenya, you need to sign up and create an account. This process requires you to key in your credit card details.

Currently, Alexa.com has placed Netflix.com at 34 in the list of top 500 websites on the web.

The streaming media company has appeared on Forbes’ list of World’s most innovative companies. It means business.

Netflix Kenya Packages and Prices

The company offers three packages: basic, standard, and premium.

New users can enjoy free streaming for one month after which they can opt for any of the three paid packages.

You can enjoy the Netflix on your desktop, personal computer, smartphone, or tablet. The Netflix app is available for the Android, iOS, and Windows.

You can also access the content through Smart TVs, PlayStations, Xbox, Chromecast, Apple TV, Blu-ray players, and much more.

Netflix plans and pricing:

[table id=11 /]

If you are subscribed to any of the three packages, you get the first month for free.

If for some reason you feel that Netflix is not working for you, you can cancel anytime. That’s definitely convenient and awesome.

For a seamless streaming experience, your internet connection should be fast.

That probably explains why Netflix was named one of the biggest internet hogs in America.

Slow speed translates into low resolution and that can only mean a poor experience. Netflix is kind enough to publish recommended speeds for various resolutions.

Netflix Content in Kenya

The Netflix movie and TV shows collection is large. The problem is that some shows cannot be accessed due to licensing issues in various countries. Kenya included.

Earlier, you could access content that is not available in Kenya through Virtual Personal Network (VPN-changes your IP address) services such as TunnelBear.

Netflix banned this. Sadly.

The streets were especially excited about Narcos; the story about the Pablo Escobar, the Colombian kingpin.

Also, Sense8 was much anticipated since some of its scenes were shot in Nairobi.

Netflix’s entry into the Kenyan market was not all rosy since the Kenya Film Classification Board threatened to block Netflix for its inappropriate content.

Netflix, however, remained adamant that it incorporated parental control.

The Communications Authority (CA) came to the company’s rescue stating that Netflix cannot be treated as a traditional media arguing that it operates like media such as YouTube or Facebook.

These are online platforms that do not require licensing to operate in Kenya.

Well, despite these problems, Netflix started its operations in early 2016 and is still gaining a following.

Whatsapp’s New Features and Reception

Unless you just got kidnapped or live in a hole, you must have heard of Whatsapp’s new status feature.

The new update was rolled out during Whatsapp 8th birthday.

Happy Birthday Whatsapp!

News of the updates spread first but that’s expected since this affects over 1.2 billion Whatsapp users.

This feature is available for iPhone, Android, and Windows platforms.

The new feature allows you to update statuses in the form of images, emojis, animated GIFs, and videos. This is definitely a shift from the text-only statuses.

This update will be seen by selected contacts in your contact list for 24 hours.

What this means is that you will be expected to update your status after every 24 hours! Probably not the best idea but, who knows? we may all warm up to this idea.

The status updates are end-to-end encrypted as is the case with chats and calls on this platform.

Perhaps one of the most striking things is that friends can now reply to your status update and you can, in turn, see who viewed your status update by tapping the eye icon at the bottom of the status update.

The update is seen as a strategy that could eventually usher in money-making ventures especially advertising.

Whatsapp seems to be moving towards connecting its huge user base with enterprises.

Users have shown strong aversion towards ads and anything that distracts them; hence, Whatsapp must proceed with caution.

Third party access to the platform must only be done if and when businesses can engage with customers in a simple and spam free manner.

By now, you must have realized that this idea does not sound very new. That’s because it isn’t.

The new Whatsapp status update borrows a lot from Snapchat stories which allow users to share similar ephemeral statuses.

It’s no surprise that Whatsapp has copied Snapchat since it has done it before with Instagram stories. This is some legal high-tech mimicry.

Will Whatsapp bring good tidings? Not according to some people.

Negative Reception

The Snapchat-like feature attracted mixed reactions on social media platforms. Some are unsure about what the update could mean for them.

The Twitterverse was deluged with mean tweets. Some described the update as “unnecessary “and “useless”.Others decried the privacy violation of the new status feature.

Others decried the privacy violation of the new status feature.

Some people voiced their dislike for the new feature with some even inquiring whether they could go back to the old Whatsapp version.

Amidst all the hate, others expressed their joy and especially praised the option of showing your status to selected people.

The Other Pressing Issue

As Whatsapp moves towards monetizing the platform, there is another thing that calls for immediate attention.

The app needs to invest in a feature that can give people control over which groups they should be added to.

The same goes for Facebook! It is extremely annoying when the notification reads, in part, “…added you to the group…” It’s annoying and sometimes awkward to keep leaving groups you did not ask to be added to in the first place. Zuckerberg, fix this!

Gionee M6 Specifications, Review and Price in Kenya

Gionee M6 is among smartphone brands that are expected to enter the Kenyan market soon.

The handset comes with impressive features and technologies.

Gionee M6 is a premium member of the Gionee M-series manufactured by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Gionee.

The company is among China’s largest smartphone manufacturers.

M6 was launched towards the end of 2016 at a time when the various top and second-tier companies were launching their flagships.

The company also unveiled Gionee M2017 which comes with a 7,000mAh battery capacity and 6GB RAM into the market.

Isn’t that exquisite? Should be if such inclusions are anything to go by.

Let’s look at M6. What’s hot? What’s not?

Gionee M6 key specifications:

[table id=13 /]

Design and Display

The M6 design will leave you with a good first impression. It’s one of those handsets that arouse curiosity once you set eyes on it-even the images tell an appealing story.

The smartphone sports a carefully crafted aluminum unibody design with impressive smooth edges.

You can comfortably hold it in your hands and it can as well fit in your pockets.

The same cannot be said about M6 plus since it’s a bit big.

The 5.5-inch AMOLED display and 401 ppi will definitely offer an awesome experience.

The translates into impressive viewing angles. If you enjoy watching videos and movies on a smartphone screen, M6 will definitely meet your needs adequately.

Performance

With a 1.8GHz octa-core processor and 4GB RAM, you can expect an okay performance.

The various apps should launch first and you should comfortably multitask.

The audio quality is also expected to be impressive.

In the recent past, most smartphone manufacturers are opting for Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset but Gionee decided to stick with MediaTek.

We will take it, nevertheless.

Gionee M6 Camera

The 13MP rear camera is good enough for everyday use.

The 8MP rear front facing camera is apt for selfies.

The primary camera comes with phase detection, autofocus, geotagging, HDR, panorama, dual-LED FLASH, touch focus, and face detection.

Photos captured by a camera of this capacity should be decent.

Of course, it may struggle a bit in low light conditions-quite honestly expected.

Yet, we can’t sulk over this since I am yet to find a handset that captures perfect images in low light conditions. Anything? Don’t worry, I’ll wait for an answer.

Battery

Gionee M6 comes with 5000mAh battery capacity slightly lower than that of M5 Plus which packs 5,020mAh battery capacity.

Gionee deserves a pat on the back for this.

The M-series appears to focus more on battery life since the M6 Plus comes with a massive 6,020mAh battery.

The 9V2A dual charge chips are included to ensure fast-charging capabilities.

Gionee seems to have gone an extra mile with battery life by incorporating features that allow low power usage.

The battery system has sensors and other technologies that monitor power consumption.

The inclusion of app freezing and background cleaning ensure that unnecessary apps are shut down.

This way, performance is optimized and power usage minimized.

Security

During the launch of M6, Gionee stressed that this handset is the first smartphone with ultimate security features.

Reason being?

The handset comes with an encryption chip for the Chinese variant though Kenyan consumers will only get an M6 with a fingerprint scanner, privacy protection, and malware destruction.

So,

What’s good?

  • Battery capacity and life
  • Processor
  • RAM
  • USB Type-C
  • Design and display

What’s not?

  • Maybe the fact that not have the encryption chip for enhanced security.
  • 16MP primary camera maybe; the 13MP is okay but ambition doesn’t hurt.

Verdict?

Gionee M6 is a next generation handset that meets the needs of a majority of smartphone users.

The giant Chinese manufacturer did not compromise much on this handset.

The handset is good for travel given its awesome battery life, for watching videos and movies, and a camera phone for everyday use.

The specs are impressive so I don’t see why consumers should not give Gionee a try.

The brand name may sound a bit off, but the company means business and the manufacture of M6 is proof.

There is a lot to love about M6 unless you are a phocist-just made that up to mean phone bias.

The good news is that if you are a nomophobe, M6 will definitely feed your obsession. Gracefully.

Chinese phone makers seem to be transforming the industry one smartphone brand at a time.

Guess their time to eat has officially arrived. Good for them. The timing is perfect and the reward is well-deserved.

Fero Royale Y1 Review Specs and Price in Kenya

Fero Royale Y1 is hands down a beautifully crafted handset. Props to Fero Mobile for crafting such a gorgeous handset. The compliments are well deserved.

Fero mobile ventured into the competitive Kenyan market in 2016 by releasing a range of sleek handsets namely Royale Y1, Royale X1, and J1.

Royale Y1 is an entry level handset but I must admit that its design is tops. Fero mobile promised us “youthful vibrancy” with its handsets and it did deliver with Y1.

After using Y1 for about two weeks, I believe I qualify to tell my side of the story about the good, the bad, and the not so good.

Price in Kenya

Jumia: Ksh. 12,800

Royale F1 Key specs summary

  • Android Marshmallow v6.0 OS
  • 5.5-inch HD IPS display
  • 13MP primary camera, 5MP secondary camera with LED flash
  • Connectivity-Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.2, microUSB v2.0, 3.5mm earpiece jack
  • Processor-1.3GHz quad-core processor, MTK6735 processor
  • Memory-2GB RAM, 16GB ROM
  • Battery-2,700mAh Li-poly non-removable
  • 4G-enabled

Display and Design

The design is A-Okay. Y1 is definitely easy on the eye. The handset comes in two rich colors and it is encrusted in a titanium-based metallic body.

It appears that Fero Mobile invested in the design more than any other feature. It may sound sycophancy but you need to see the handset to believe it. It is, indeed, beautifully crafted.

The display is okay. Clarity has been observed and the icons are arranged well. The beautiful and vivid colors are realistically saturated.

The screen is big enough for those who enjoy watching movies or videos on their handsets. We all enjoy browsing on a sizable screen and Y1 does deliver on the promise of a seamless UX when it comes to interacting with the screen.

Performance

The various apps launch at an okay speed. The handset comes with a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and 2GB RAM. The handset was released into the market in 2016; hence, we cannot sulk much.

The 2GB RAM is definitely a compromise. The good news is that the handset can multitask at an okay speed since I could enjoy my games and chat consecutively.

The handset comes with Whatsapp and Google Chrome so you don’t have to go through the trouble of downloading. This I did like. Very much.

Y1 was launched in 2016 so we won’t be going back and forth about the OS. We can only frown upon 2017 handsets that don’t come with Nougat.

Camera (s)

The 13MP primary camera did not produce gorgeous photos as I would have expected. I may have been a bit ambitious after using mid-rangers such as Camon c9 and Samsung Galaxy J5.

This feature comes with LED flash. The photos are decent in good lighting but it did struggle in low lighting conditions.

Royale Y1 comes with a “sweet selfie” app that comes with several camera features such as beauty mode, timer, and allows you to share the photos to your various digital media platforms.

Below are a few shots:

An image of Think road during the day
An Image of Thika Road captured using Royale Y1 at midday
An image taken at 7.00PM on Thika Road using Royale Y1
An image taken at 7.00PM on Thika Road using Royale Y1

Battery

The 2,700mAh battery is not the ideal capacity in 2017. The battery lasted almost 12 hours on heavy use and 2 days on normal use.

The LI-POLY non-removable battery should have been better if it came with a higher capacity, say 3,000mAh.

The battery does not take long to charge and this is a plus considering the compromise on the capacity. Users deserved this.

Bottom line

Royale Y1 is a handset for someone who is looking for an okay mid-range handset. Some compromises have been made especially in terms of RAM and battery capacity.

If you can overlook these, then you will enjoy interacting with the various features. This is especially if you are big on design and display.

The price is okay for a mid-range handset but mid-range smartphones such as Tecno Boom J8 and Infinix Hot S came with better features.

While, the handset packs some key features present in other handsets in the same category, a 3000mAh battery capacity, and 3GB RAM would have been desirable.

Nevertheless, if the specs turn you on, go ahead and ball out! At least you will be doing so on a budget.

What’s good?

  • Gorgeous design
  •  Impressive Display
  • 4GB enabled
  • Operating System
  • Processing power
  • Affordable price

What’s not?

  • Low RAM
  • Average battery capacity

Rosemary Odinga: 10 Things You Didn’t Know

News of Rosemary Odinga’s admission at the Agha Khan and Nairobi hospitals spread fast.

While the family has remained mum about her condition, reports indicate that she had complained of a headache before hospitalization.

Rosemary is the second-born child of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, an entrepreneur, an advocate for alternative education and a candid supporter of social equality.

Here are ten interesting things about Rosemary Odinga:

1. She was born on August 13th, 1977.

That makes her 39 years old. Who knew? Hands down a youthful looking 39-year old.

2. She did not have an easy childhood

Between her father’s arrests, politically motivated home raids, and rejection by other children at school and neighborhood, it was not all roses.

Life for her and her siblings was not all rosy since reports indicate that some children even avoided playing with them.

She spent much of her childhood without her father as he had been in detention for several years in the ‘80s.

This affected the family economically as her mother, a secondary school teacher, had been the main breadwinner yet endured several arrests.

3. She wrote a letter to President Moi

In 1990, Rosemary wrote an open letter to the then President Daniel Moi requesting him to set free his father and other political prisoners.

She was barely in her teens and the letter received considerable publicity as it was published in the Society Magazine.

4. She well learned

Rosemary holds a degree in Sociology (Criminal Justice) from Howard University and an MBA in Business Marketing from the University Of Dallas, Texas.

5. She is perhaps the most popular snail farmers in East Africa

In case you are wondering, snails are food for a section of the high-end market.

From my research, I can confirm that the escargot-it somehow sounds more edible when referred by their French name- is nutritious as it is rich in iron, vitamin E, and Magnesium.

It is virtually free of sugar, carbohydrates, and fats.

Surprisingly nutritious, right?

6. She has served as the patron of the Rugby Union Club at the Upper Hill School

She is also a member of the Global Chinese Business Future Leaders Club and Global Peace Foundation.

7. She has expressed interest in vying for the Kibra parliamentary seat

She seems to be the only Odinga with political interests since Winnie Odinga and Raila Junior have not been actively involved in politics.

This started in her teen years since she would accompany her father and grandfather to political rallies.

Her late brother Fidel Castro was actively involved in politics before his untimely death. Her father was the

Her father was the Kibra MP for two decades.

8. She serves as the Executive Director of the Raila Odinga Center (ROC)

ROC is a foundation that seeks to provide academic scholarships to young people in the East African region.

The foundation seeks to equip young leaders with leadership skills and develop sports talents among the youth.

As a patron, she has facilitated the access of government services for women and youth.

Thousands have been able to access national identification cards and birth certificates.

She has also been actively involved in youth sports activities.

9. She is the patron of Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya

As a patron, she has facilitated the access of government services for women and youth.

Thousands have been able to access national identification cards and birth certificates.

She has also been actively involved in youth sports activities.

10. She is not married but has mothered two girls, Saphie and Senayi.

We wish Rosemary Odinga a quick recovery.

We are definitely looking forward to seeing her get back to her active political and entrepreneurship activities.

Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has launched Pesa Link, Cuts out intermediaries

Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has launched Pesa Link, an inter-bank Mobile transfer service.

The platform targets mobile users and it will enable customers to transfer money from one bank account to another account in a different bank in real time.

Customers can transfer from as low as Ksh. 10 to as high as Ksh. 999,999.

Talks on the development of this platform had been ongoing for about five years before the launch.

The banking industry’s umbrella body launched the real-time interbank switch on Thursday the 16th February 2017.

This comes at a time when intermediaries, especially Safaricom, have been benefiting from inter-bank transfer transactions.

With Pesa Link, mobile money transfer services will no longer act as intermediaries and this saves banks from transaction fees paid to intermediaries.

At the moment, only 12 Kenyan banks are on board but KBA is optimistic that more banks will be joining the bandwagon in coming months.

KBA officials have asserted that it has taken time for some banks to join the movement since their headquarters are in other parts of the world and protocol has to be followed when and if any investments are to be made.

The 12 banks that have embraced the Pesa Link and are approved by the Central Bank of Kenya are:

  • Standard Chartered Bank
  • Co-Operative Bank
  • Barclays Bank
  • Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA)
  • I & M Bank
  • Diamond Trust Bank
  • Gulf African Bank
  • Guardian Bank
  • Victoria Commercial Bank
  • Credit Bank
  • Prime Bank
  • Middle East Bank

Speaking during the launch, Habil Olaka, KBA’s Chief Executive Officer, stated that the decision to have an industry-owned mobile money transfer platform was an indication that the industry is embracing digital solutions for better financial services.

The transaction fees will differ from one bank to another. When asked about the transaction fee rates, Olaka dodged the question but instead chose to talk about other advantages of the platform.

In addition to mobile money inter-bank transfers, Pesa Link will enable customers to transact via ATMs, money agents, bank branches, and the various internet platforms.

Pesa Link will operate under the Integrated Payment Services Limited (IPSL), a subsidiary of KBA.

Pesa Link’s inter-bank services are the first phase since KBA is set to venture into the merchant payments and utility bills market in its second rollout.

This will not be a new thing since Equity bank has already rolled out Equitel which supports merchant payment services.

Currently, this service is dominated by Safaricom’s M-Pesa.

The launch of Pesa Link in Kenya comes at a time when technology is taking over various operations in the banking industry.

Banks have been forced to entrench technology in their various operations and this may explain why Pesa Link has been embraced.

James Gachora, KBA Vice chairman, confirmed this by saying that banks will need to continue innovating to stay afloat.

His views were seconded by NIC Bank CEO.

The signing of the bill limiting interest rates by the president came as a big blow for the banking sector.

This affected banks’ earnings; hence, these institutions are trying to put in place strategies to reduce costs of operation and ultimately make up for the lost revenue.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see the launch of other technological innovations that will disrupt the banking industry.

This Week in Tech: Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has Launched Pesa Link and More Weekly Tech Trends

In case you have been off the grid, here’s a round-up of this week’s tech trends, news, and events:

1. KBA launches Pesa Link

The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has launched Pesa Link.

This service enables a real-time bank to bank cash transfers via mobile phones.

Customers can transfer from as low as Ksh. 10 to as high as 999,999.

This leaves no room for intermediaries.

Good news for banks since they will no longer pay “exorbitant fees” but bad news for mobile money transfer service providers.

2. NYS Alleged Voter Registration

The National Youth Service (NYS) was this week accused of conducting parallel voter registration in Runda.

The allegations came after Runda residents purported that some NYS personnel was registering voters at the PCEA Beula Church in Runda.

IEBC denies such activities arguing that the software used by NYS personnel is totally different from the one used by the elections body to register voters.

3. M-PESA Upgrade

Safaricom has upgraded M-Pesa to enable customers to receive a transaction fee notification.

This will be part of M-Pesa’s confirmation message.

The giant telecommunication describes this as a way of enhancing transparency. The first phase of this service was rolled out this week.

The second phase is expected to be rolled out soon and it will see customers receive popup notifications for any charges prior to the transaction.

The third phase is expected to avail this service to other financial products such as M-Shwari, KCB M-Pesa, and M-Tiba.

4. The government to Start Snooping on Your Calls

The Kenyan government, through Communications Authority of Kenya, wants to start listening to your calls, read your texts, and check your mobile money transactions.

Big brother seeks to start snooping into your private conversations without needing a court order.

Reason? To track counterfeit devices!

And as expected, this ignited heated debate on Twitter with some maintaining that our privacy is being thrown to the dogs.

5. The Two Rivers Mall Opens

Finally!

And how is this connected to technology?

The mall has an app, The Two Rivers Mall app, to help shoppers pay their parking fees and access other info on the services available in the complex.

The security detail also employs heavy security features.

6. Safaricom Staff accused of thievery

A manager at Safaricom has been accused of stealing mobile phones valued at above Ksh. 69.5 million.

That must be a lot of phones. And nice ones for that matter.

Well, reports suggest that Mr. Stanley Opiyo Mjomba was arraigned in court for allegedly stealing 814 assorted mobile phones.

7. SGR First Consigent Arrives in Kenya

Kenyan Railways received the first consignment of wagons that will be deployed on the Standard Gauge Railway.

If you haven’t lost interest in SGR news, especially after seeing the first class trains, well, here goes the other good news.

8. Spark Venture Invests in FarmDrive

Safaricom’s Spark Venture Fund has invested in FarmDrive, a data analytics startup that makes financial services easily available to small-scale farmers.

Through this investment, farmers will be able to access financing via their mobile phones.

9. Airtel Supports Digital Literacy

Airtel Kenya has extended support for Digital Literacy by offering routers and 3G connectivity for free internet connectivity.

This connection targets the Intel Mobile Caravan under the She Will Connect Programme.

10. Facebook Job Posting Platform

Facebook is set to roll out a feature that allows job posting and application on its platform.

The tech giant is definitely coming for LinkedIn so we can only sit back, relax, and enjoy our popcorns we wait to see how LinkedIn responds to this.

ION: Uber announced a vacancy for a marketing manager. The ehailing company is looking for someone who loves social media and is experienced in navigating through various platforms. The preferred candidate should have marketing, sales, and business development experience. If this sounds like something you would like to do, get more details and apply it. .

Of course, these stats change over time since the idea of “most influential” is subject to change.

Thus, the list of most influential celebrities, bloggers, politicians, pastors, and persons is not ultimate.

Never has been.

Talking of pastors, what would we use to rank the most influential? Perhaps in terms of followers? Tithes and offerings? Rides? On one who roars the most or stretches their vocal cords best? Miracle stunts?

What about politicians? Would it be the one in the know about the “evils” of an administration?  Best PR stunts? Renowned looter? These would be tricky so I guess we will cross the bridge if and when we get there. Fingers crossed.
